My Grandfather acquired an SVT-40 , he then passed it on to me. After seeing the recent batch of SVT's for sale I noticed that their bolt's are purple or a sort of metallic brown is this a result of arsenal refurbishment? My gun is a 1941 Tula.

P.S.-My grandfather traded a Remington Nylon 66 for it.It was either the SVT or two Swedish Mausers either way quite a deal.

SVT colouring

It was caused by the blueing process that reacted with the high nickel content of the steel. Sometimes, the effect is aggravated by a low temperature of the blueing baths.

PP has it. There are two batches (import lots) of SVT rifles you will find. The most recent are from Ukraine (?) and are distinguishable by the plum coloured bolt carriers. When you look closely there are laser engraved German proof-house markings.

The old batch you might find are Finnish Army captured rifles from 1939-40 Winter War. They will have SA stamped on the receiver ring, and except for maybe some extra shellac or repairs, are not reworked. These rifles are guaranteed battlefield pickups by stealthy Finns on skiis policing up the battlefield off dead Russians.

Yep!
And I would be really happy to find a complete untouched SA stamped SVT-40 today: the vast majority of very good Finnish SVT were imported here by Globe Firearms who chopped them up and chambered them in .303 British in hopes of selling them as hunting rifles...:(
You could buy them in the Sears or Eaton's catalogs as the Globco.

Funny you should say that. i have an SA marked, Kovrov arsenal built example that was not butchered by Globe!

Ah that appears to have the sniper notch. If it is an original sniper, it is woth a heck of a premium--Finn capture, non refurb sniper!
