Unblemished Mossberg Nightstick?? Unobtanium?

I’ve just ended a five month odyssey of trying to buy a Mossberg Nightstick.

Is it possible to buy a relatively clean new Nightstick??

In June I ordered one online from a reputable gun shop. When I received it the was a chunk out of the wood forend (pics in link below). I was referred to Gretch for warranty replacement of the foreend and that is a whole other story of frustration. After a few months getting nowhere with Gretch I contacted the vendor for other options - good news the Mossberg Rep located a forend for me, it took a few more contacts and I received the forend in early November. It was clearly not a Nightstick forend, probably a 590 Retrograde (Pics in link below).

Back to the vendor I go and they who agreed to send me a return shipping label and send me a new gun. I get the new gun and the rail screws on top of the receiver are a mess, stripped slots and scratches around the screw holes and what looks like touch up paint (Pics in link below). The gun also has excessive racking marks on the mag tube.

I contact the vendor again and they agree to take the gun back but will not pay for return shipping again but if I ship it back they will give me a refund on the original purchase. The vendor implied I was too picky on the condition so a that point I figured I’d eat the $32 shipping and take the refund.

So 5 months later I’m a little gun shy (��) about trying to get a Nightstick through another vendor. Are there any out there that are of reasonable quality? It’s my first Mossberg (own a REM, Benelli and Boito).

Would really like to hear from others who have bought a Shockwave or Nightstick about what the finished quality was like!

Yup that wouldnt work for me either, I would have probably lived with the tiny blemish on the first forend and not had to return or post anything
 
Those screws looked absolutely butchered in my opinion.

There are a few Canadian websites who say they have them in stock... I would call them in person before placing your order, to make sure you receive an absolute brand new model. Phone calls might make your life easier, and save on return fees.
 
I don’t blame you OP, I would’ve returned both of them as well. When I buy new I expect like new condition, if I’m buying used I fully expect some indications of use like dings and dents in the stock etc.
 
Almost gave up on it and was going to fix the first one with the forend chip, really like working on my guns but it hate the idea of having to fix a brand new gun.

To tell you the honest truth most people couldn't care less anymore . as in those who are still working . and I was trying to find a buddy a shotgun in the US and he lives in Texas and they are sold out all over the US. he managed to get a killer private deal on an 870 the other day . so as for the problems with your shotgun . the forend was damaged during shipping or someone farting around with it or careless handling . they are more than likely running on a skeleton crew at Mossberg because of Covid. that's why the screws are #####ed up like that . I would have been angry and said ship me some new screws and if I couldn't handle the chip in the forend I would have said ship me another one .

Buy the new one, and don't look back. I had a bad experience with crooked sights on a brand new 870P, and scuffs on the parkerized finish. (which scuff easily anyway) After pressing the dealer, I learned it was their last...and had been their "demo" gun sitting on the rack. (lots of people handled it) I could get over the small scuffs, obvious signs of racking the pump....but sights canted about 10 degrees? No thanks. These guns are (were?) supposed to undergo stringent QC if meant for LE. I actually drove to my LGS and asked to see a couple 870 EXPRESS slug guns, and couldn't believe that both had perfect sights. I asked to see a third one, they obliged=ALSO perfect sights. And here I was with an 870 costing nearly 2X the price....and sh**ty sights.

Life happens, the world is an imperfect place...but go get the gun you want new, and have fun with it. I was a die-hard Remington guy forever and still love them...but my 12ga toy is a 500 Persuader with the parkerized finish. That gun goes with everything. :) Mossbergs are great shotguns, at least the ones I've used.

I hear ya. I was an 870 guy, too, but have since sold them in favour of 590A1’s. The controls on the Mossberg feel much more natural and intuitive to me.
 
...What?? You bought a (ONE) gun, it came with a bit of damage, and you assume that every one in existence is going to be damaged in some way? Like factory new un-blemished models of this particular gun don't exist because the one you got had a dent in the wood? Lol

[I]Like I said in the post - Mossberg warranty and the vendor were not able to send me the correct replacement forend in 5 months of trying, I had no reason to think they would have replaced the screws on the second one and the receiver was also scratched.

Yup was wondering why a vendor would send out two guns with damage if there are good ones out there! That’s why I was asking for info from CGNers who had bought one.
 
There are definitely positives to shopping in person and seeing the shotgun you are buying... I've received pretty expensive guns and they've been marred as well.
 
Is Mossberg still making the Retrograde models? Certain ones like the 20" 590 (non-590A1) seems to be out of stock everywhere.

The walnut on my Retro looks beautiful. Was thinking on getting all 3 sizes, but not much stock around, it seems. Also, the 590A1 models are quite expensive.
