My dad is asking for suggestions for an airgun that would be good for pest control - he has gophers on his property. He doesn't have a PAL.

It would be his first airgun, and I think a springer would be the easiest to get started up on. I'm thinking .22 or .25, to at least have a little more power for pests since the limit is 500 fps.

Where should I steer him?

I don’t believe you’ll find a sub 500 fps .25 cal.

As for dealers there’s D&L airguns, airgun source, airgun heads, airgun archery fun, Canada shooting supply.

Maybe not. I don't have experience with the sub 500's in Canada.

My PCP airguns are more then capable of taking gophers out (and then some). Then again, I'm not limited to 500 fps.

We were bloodthirsty little pirates with our pellet guns, while not impossible to kill a groundhog with one its not pretty. Even for bloodthirsty little pirates.

If your father hasnt used an airgun before a springer isnt the easiest to use. Have a look at those Beeman QB78s. They are co2 but in in anything but the winter they work well. It will be way more easy to shoot accurately and can be tuned to get real close to 500fps which non pal springers dont usually shoot near, especially in .22.

Just googling the difference between gophers and groundhogs, didn't realize the size difference.
Gophers maybe, my experience is groundhogs are way to tough for a garden variety airgun

I would Recommend a qb78 co2 rifle, much easier to shoot accurately, very dependable and servicable. Not too big or heavy.

Airsoft are generally less than 500fps.

The typical weight of an air soft bb is 0.12 grams the heaviest is 0.40 grams, the heaviest weight airsoft bb is close to the lightest weight .177 pellet.

Make sure you use Predator pellets.

There’s other options like jsb hades and oddly enough target wad cutters within 10m or so. They’re better off with an accurate pellet the gun likes.

It would be a stretch for a groundhog ( marmotte ), those can weight easily 6 or 7 pounds.

Agreed. My buddies property had marmots under the workshop outbuilding when they moved in. Non-pal Pellet guns did nothing to them. The farm dogs took care of them when they got moved up there though.

Sub 500 FPS just isnt an efficient gun for killing anything larger then a chipmunk. Certainly not a gopher.

If he wants to shoot things and watch them run away to die painfully, or have to go smash them with a shovel afterwords, then go for it. But thats cruel and possibly illegal if its deemed animal abuse.

He might be better off trying to livetrap them.

I have killed 4 marmottes last summer at my Ont. farm with… My Ravin crossbow and practice bolts.
