Under $500, lightweight, 300m shots, with a mil reticle?

Maybe I'm crazy, but for under 300 yards and hunting big game, I'm perfectly happy using a MPBR zero and a duplex reticle. Why needlessly complicate things?
I second that outrageous opinion. Duplex or German #4 reticle and 6.5 prc or 6.5 creed do fine out to 300. Even .308 with a slight hold will make it if you have 20” plus barrel length and a decent bullet and load.

Appreciate this perspective. I think that because I am more a shooter than a hunter that I am maybe making this more complicated than I need to. I have a great range to practice at out to 320m, so I could definitely practice with a simple reticle before taking a shot on game.

Even at 100 yards shooting off hand at game is insanely difficult for me... The adrenaline is crazy and I always end up backing off my scope to it's lowest magnification and taking a knee.

Maybe I just suck lol

The basic duplex gives you at least two aim points, the center cross and the top of the lower post
zero @~200 the post should be spot on for ~350 depending on Xpower settings and bullet ballistics

Bushnell elite 3200, 3500 or 4200.
Made in Japan by LOW, excellent glass for the price. And they hold zero very well. The older 4500s were made in Japan too, but the new ones are made in Korea. They're probably just fine, but I prefer Japanese. The DOA reticle has holdovers, but I believe they're all moa.

A quick hit with Arsenalforce shows that Lanz has the 3500 3-9 with DOA reticle in stock for $350. That's what I'd pick if moa is tolerable. They're hunting scopes, fixed parallax. If you need adjustable parallax or good tracking, cheapest I'd go is Arken.

Riton wasn't on my list, but I will check them out. Thanks!
Vortex has had a good bit of market share for good reason, they are good scopes; Riton is trying to get a bigger market share and as a result you will get more for your money. Life time warranty just like Vortex too. Couple years for the one on the 6.5 x 55 with a lot of rounds through the rifle. I never moves. The other I have had for maybe 6 months on a CZ452, it tracks perfectly and I frequently adjust it for elevation and windage. So clear also. If they keep doing what they are doing, I'm sold.

trijicon accupoint 3-9x40 green mil-dot duplex, 5 mil's of holdover at 9x, 4 dots below the crosshair and then where the post thickens up is 5 mils, take you way past your 300 yards from that zero, you'll mostly just be working from zero and the first couple dots, might be a bit more expensive than your ask but for a 13.4 oz 1" tube hunter that will fit your initial ask pretty good with solid reputation for durability and quality glass, buy once cry once is always the formula

the above accupoint with 308 and 168 white box eldm from 20" at 2600 fps in a bunch of Alberta from 100 zero and at 9x magnification would equal

1st mil-dot 255/260 yards
2nd dot 370/375 yards
3rd dot 470/475 yards'
4th dot 560/565 yards
Post thickening at 645/650 yards (5th mil)

seems to be a rule that under 10x magnification no need for parallax adjust

I have this scope, the dot covers about 4-5" on my 15" gong at 425 yards....very useful hunting reticle, simple. Have digital post make a nice black decal with bold white letters to slap on the stock or they've done many for me in 3/4" wide by 1" deep to have your holdovers right on the scope tube between the rings, you can do same for some 10 kmh wind hold inches for 300/400/500 yards type thing. Middle your data for around 5000' and 5c temps and you'll be very close all the way to 600 yards from 2500' antelope to 8500' sheep, no more than a couple clicks out (at 600) on the 308(168 eldm), maybe only one click out on slipperier 6.5 options at the extreme ends of your elevation ranges and temps. Grab your rangefinder, gun/ammo and go hunting. That's about as boiled down simple as you can get with that scope and decal set up.
