I am close to buying a Diana 350 magnum, but this gun requires a PAL and would be considered a firearm ?
Or should I look for under 500 FPS for backyard shooting?
I have a large private yard but Iam in Surrey, is it safe to assume shooting a Airgun under 500 is OK but a gun rated at 800 FPS would be legally no different than shooting a rim fire?
I have heard the fast ( 800 FPS ) guns are also loud. Any helpfull insight would be appreciated, am I overlooking anything?

Thanks

Yes Diana 350 magnum, would be considered a firearm since it shoots faster than 500 FPS. It's rated for 1250 FPS, so it would shoot around 1000 FPS and be kinda loud. Probably be around 90 - 100 DB, unless it dieseling.

I thought about that myself.... If I shoot a over 500 FPS airgun in the back yard. Would it be the same as shooting a 22LR?

I would check the town bylaws in your area, chances are there will be a no discharge bylaw including under 500fps.(even on your own property)

I don't know specifically about Surrey bylaws, but in Vancouver, and I think in New Westminster, discharge of any weapon is forbidden. That includes any airgun and also bow and arrow and even slingshot. There used to be weekly airgun target sessions at a little theatre in Point Grey near the hostel, but that stopped years ago. When I was a kid in Vancouver in the late 1960's we shot BB rifles all the time. Nowadays doing that would likely bring a bunch of police. Probably best to call Surrey City Hall and ask... from a payphone maybe.

You could probably find out on line your local bylaws. Full power air guns arent suitable for back yard shooting, too dangerous and noisy. A Diana 350 is a large gun physically for fun plinking too conspicuous. If you get a 350 go .22 though

Right, of course the bylaw is available online:
https://www.surrey.ca/bylawsandcouncillibrary/BYL-reg-12349-115F.pdf
Says there are exceptions such as target shooting clubs, wildlife and slaughterhouse uses for commercial purposes, police duty use, a couple of other things, and from the looks of it probably pest management on farmlands. But since 1994 this bylaw would make discharge of an airgun outside those exceptions punishable by a $2,000 fine, six months in jail, or both.
