I was given a tobacco tin years ago that had a bunch of old buttons, coins, train tickets, pins and other junk that was found in a trunk in an attic of an old house in the UK. The house had been in the family for a long time and it is believed that the tin contained souvenirs from Grandad's return from Europe in WWI. I did get a few bayonets and cap badges too, so the story sounds about right.

In the tin were some old cartridges with the bullets pulled and the powder dumped. There were some 303 Brit, 8mm Mauser rounds that I recognised along with what I now know as a French 8mm lebel cartridge. There is one more round that I found in there that I have not quite figured out yet.

The only markings on the head stamp are G17 and 7.62. Just curious if anybody recognises this one.

Looks like a 7.62x54r. They were made all over the place but G17 indicates it was probably Made in Leeds, England by Greenwood & Batley. Not sure if 17 is the year.

Very most likely a British manufacturer . Have you measured it again a known 303 brit or 7,62 54r ? My reference material doesn't have that example of that exact head stamp. but likely British as others have mentioned , those manufacturers are just mentioned as 303 British surplyer.
Thanks for showing it .

Thank you for that.

I don't have an example of 7.62x54, so I show besides a round of 1938 German 7.62x56 (says 8mm M30 scharfe on cartridge box) on left and a round of 303 Brit on right.

One of the reasons after all these years of having them, is a little project to identify them so that if and when I come across somebody with the right reloading dies, I will get them resized and the bullet recrimped on a case full of sand. Right now all the bullets are loose, falling out and rolling around in the tobacco tin. Eventually they will get lost or mixed up and would be of little interest to future collectors. I did up the 303 Brit ones and put them back.
