I just got back from a grizzly hunt in Alaska and wanted to share a couple pics and a short story. I was in Unit 13 in South central Alaska (where the grizzly season runs year round for population control) hunting above tree line on the berry patches. Due to my work it is very hard to get away in the spring and fall, so I decided to try a summer bear hunt in a unit in Alaska with a very generous bear hunting season. Myself and my guide where flown in and dropped off on an unnamed lake with tent and supplies. Pretty much all tundra with patches of Alder and willow bush. In three days we seen 8 grizzly, 7 black bear and about a dozen caribou. I shot this bear on the third day of my hunt about 3.5 miles from our tents. The bear squared 7'8" and had a 20 3/4 inch skull (measured by the Alaska Dept of Fish and Game). It was a classic spot and stalk hunt that ended with a 180 yd broadside shot. Three 180gr bullets from my 30.06 and the bear was dead, not going more than ten feet from where I first hit it. My guide Jake has the entire stalk and kill on video which is definately an added bonus. Man was I excited!! My first grizzly. Two years ago I had spent 12 days on Kodiak Island hunting brown bears and came home empty handed, so this was pretty sweet. Of course the hide is not in prime condition like a spring or fall bear, but is beautifull none the less with great coloring. It has always been a dream of mine to kill a grizzly/brown bear and it finally happend.....pretty cool!!! I left the skull and hide in Alaska to get bleached and tanned.
