Is there any information on the universal M1 carbines. I tried google but did not find much. I have heard these are different from USGI versions. What is different about them? How does the quality compare betwen them. What parts if any are interchangable? What is the worth of a quality one? Does anyone have one of these?

Early universals were made with forged recievers and USGI parts, good quality rifles and 100% interchangeable parts.
Late model rifles used a dual recoil spring setup and some propietary parts, they are not quite so good.
Early USGI type universal in nice shape, I wouldn't pay anymore then $200.
Late dual spring type, I wouldn't even buy it. USGI's can be found for $300-$400 and would be a better buy.

Thanks. Is there a way to tell from the serial number or similar what version it is? I am looking at one over the net.
On the late models the op-rod hump where the bolt camming lug rides has a hole through it.....

I have an early one, the first ones have micro-groove rifleing in the barrels. They shoot very well in comparison to the milsurps I've shot. Mine also has a replacement GI trigger/magwell instead of the original. Don't know why. I like it a lot actually though it doesn't get much use anymore since all of the restricted nonsense started. bearhunter

The op handle on late models are very poor stampings that tend to break. Also, they have a toggle as a bolt hold open device. No 'USGI' parts fit. Don't buy a Universal sight unseen.

Bad news. I am not buying it:( . It is listed on freedom ventures web page under used guns. I emailed a few questions, namely: What year? bore conditon? magazine included? Also the description says it is missing the sights. I asked how they were removed. Lastly I asked for more pictures as this is all that they have on the site.

Here is the reply I got:
You must have missed the link at the top of the used guns web pages...
It is located at http://www.freedomventures.ca/fvlonggun.htm - where it says
"Please Click Here RE: Used Guns."

Here is what he is refering to:
Our Primary business is new firearms

We buy and sell used guns to keep them in circulation in Canada. (And we might get something neat for ourselves) We mark them up minimally for fast movement at gun shows and to the internet.

It's our experience that no matter what condition we list here, (other than NEW) it will be a different condition than what the buyer thinks it should be.

The information you see here is "What you see is what you get". There is no additional information; the pictures say all we can say about them.

We are open to offers on some of the firearms listed (but of course, we're not coming down a lot on a $150 gun.) so feel free to ask.

Sales on Used Guns will be final; no refunds, no discussion.

Consider this fair warning. Caveat emptor.

Now I understand that he does not want tire kickers and people expecting a new rifle from a used. But the problem is he expects to sell this rifle with only a short description,
M1 Carbine - 30 Cal. No sights, nice stock. Universal Firearms Corp is the manufacturer.
and one grainy picture. My question is who in their right mind would go for this. I for on won't.

I don't think any of my questions are unreasonable or that it is a stretch to take a few more pictures so I can see it from more angles. In fact I would think that it would help his no refund policy as I would know what I was buying. But maybe that's just me.

This is the first time I have had any issues with a sponsored dealer here and can attest to the excellent customer service at P&D and Armco. I have also made inquiries to wolverine and found them very easy to deal with. In fact they took the time on more than one occasion to take more pictures for me and answer all my questions to the best of their knowledge.

I guess I will just have to spend my money elsewhere.

Sorry Freedom.

Just fine with us.

As the message says, the used junk is only there in case someone really wants it bad (and If I get my way, soon - the used rifles section will be gone entirely) - I hate dealing in used rifles. I'm no expert on old rifles and there's too much chance someone will be unhappy with thier purchase.

We are very up front about it. I'd much rather have you not happy with our policy than spend money and not be happy later.

I wish you the best of luck finding a good M1.

The point I was getting at was that I get the feeling you couldn't care less about my business. It wasn't like any of my questions are hard to answer. It's not like snapping a few more pictures would kill you either. The fact that I can't return it makes it worse. I was going to buy a few parts for my 1911 as well but I get a much more helpful response from another sponsor.

As well I've found that the EE is really good for finding things too. Any the people there are much more receptive to questions.

OK, its a lower priced gun. Someone had a go at lengthening the barrel with an extension, no doubt during the period when this was a way to avoid restricted status. The back sight has been removed; no big deal as long as the receiver hasn't been altered. Bubba has had a go at the front sight, and the stock. There is a cutdown 5 shot magazine in place. From the look of the carbine, I think that it is an earlier M-1 clone. It would seem that the seller considers it to be "used junk", and wisely recognizes that he lacks the expertise to deal in previously owned firearms. If you want a restricted project gun that bubba has had a go at, fine. It could be repaired, but by the time you are done, the investment is going to be more that the gun is worth. If you want a decent M-1, take the sellers wish of good luck in finding what you want.

FWIW, if you are OK with Commercial M1's, get a Plainfield. they were WAY better made than the Universals or Iver Johnsons ever were and use all USGI parts aside from the receiver. The one I had was excellent. It was even better once I rebarelled it to 18.51". I only sold it because I had too many carbines and only used them at the range. The one I still have is a USGI Rock-Ola. I'd recommend a GI if you can find one.

THANK YOu. Was that so hard to type? I've already got quite a few replies from my post in the EE so I will buy one of them. I only was looking at the freedom ventures one becuase I just want a shooter, and I would feel bad shooting out a collectors piece.

I doubt you'll shoot out ANY carbine. The ammo doesn't run that hot and none of it is corrosive, so the bores are usually nice. You'd have to run an M2 Carbine on full auto for ALOt of rounds before you burnt the bbl out.

More likely you'll wear out the slide first, but they are cheap to replace.
