Found a Lee Universal Expanding Die in yet another piled up box. Does anyone use them? I can understand the need/use for a universal decap die, but I dont see the use of a universal expander. Anyone fill me in?

Thanks
Clint

I have one. Use it for neck expanding when loading cast bullets. I do have Lyman M dies for most calibers I load. I bought mine when I started loading cast in 8x56. My bullets measure 331. Could be used for most calibers.

So it "bells" less/more taper then a standard expander/decap die?

Clint

Sounds like something to hang onto

I wouldn't say that it bells less, but I am sure it can be set up to do so if one wishes. Basically you can set it up to bell out the mouth of the case as little or as much as you would like. I have had two generic ones for a long time, one long for rifle and the other for shorter handgun cases. Don't even know who made them. I bought them second hand and they wre old then. The expander in the rifle one I have is a long tapering cone while the one in the pistol is a much shorter, wider, and blunter cone. Since I use Lee dies for my handgun and straight wall rifle cartridge reloading, I just use the Lee Powder through expander die in the Lee indexing classic turret press. When I used to reload bottleneck rifle cases like 30-30 with lead bullets, I single stage the process and I used the universal expander to bell out the mouth as I don't use the Lee powder die. Since I normally load jacketed bullets these days, the universal expander gets virtually no use. In general terms, I haven't used the shorter handgun die in a long time and I only use the rifle one extremely rarely.
