Universal M1 carbine - unusual serial number?
A buddy of mine was gifted a couple of Universal M1 carbines and I attempted to help identify them but I've run into a wall.

Its marked Universal, serial number ss34xx. I'm getting all kinds of conflicting info. It seems to be mostly usgi parts.

Any help would be appreciated. The search has reignited my interest in these little rifles

He means that the M1 carbine guru's tend to hang in the Milsurp forum. That's where you'll normally find the experts on this and other Military Surplus Rifles

SS serial # for the universal should be stainless steel and is mid to late production unless its S01000 - S01600 Hialeah, FL 1961-1984

SS02000 - SS03500 was made in Jacksonville, AR 1985-1986

Thats similar to what I've found yet this rifle doesn't look to be stainless unless it was factory coated black. There were a few teflon coated models and I'm wondering if this is one of them
