Hi there, I'm wondering what the value of a very early Universal M1 Carbine would be?? It is usgi parts wise, and the serial number is 21***. It's by far the earliest serial number I have seen. Are there any universal buffs on here that could valuate this rifle for me?? It's condition is very good to good.

If it was a later generation Universal, it would be in the $400 range, but your Universal is a first generation, which are by far the best of the Universals. Interchangeable with USGI parts, and yours might even have a USGI barrel and other parts. Your looking at $600 to $750 range, same as a Plainfield.

here is mine....now you can say you have seen a much earlier one lol. 60xx s/n. check your trigger housing to see if it is USGI or Universal pot metal, mine was originally the pot metal but cracked eventually and was replaced with USGI. My barrel is odd too....12 groove rifling, not sure who made it, but Marlin comes to mind as they always made barrels with rediculous number of lands and grooves. Mine also came with a cute little folding rear sight which I guess was more popular with the hunters then the apetures...

you know what they say you can put perfume on a pig but in the end you still just have a nice smelling pig, I had a universal M1 that I bought a bit ago I didn't know a whole lot about the M1 except I wanted one and it needed to be non restricted, unfortunately for me it was a later model Universal. it was in great shape and it shot good but it was still a nice smelling pig!!! sell it for what you can and wait patiently for a real M1! that being said when I sold mine I got $750 dollars for it

There ain't no Universal Carbine that's worth $750 despite you're finding somebody daft enough to pay that. Expect maybe an early one. The later Universals are junk. And a Plainfield is in no way anywhere similar to a Universal in quality or value. NYAH!
Go here for all thing Universal Carbine and send Jim the info on your's. Jim's a good guy doing all Carbineers a service by documenting the civilian made Carbines. http://www.m1carbinesinc.com/carbine_universal.html
