Hey guys,

Can anyone identify this .303 British headstamp? I checked all the headstamp ID websites I could find but to no avail. Thanks.

Headstamp:

Here is what I was able to dig up
Type 7 head stamp ( refers to the arrangement of the scripts and Characters stampings)
Possibly a small fabrication run for a small client ( in the Netherlands)
BS= Atelier de Laminage de L‘Ecole de Pyrotechine,Bourges,France,French military

Or: Bass&Selve,Altena,Germany. On ammunition made for the Dutch military contracts.

Is it a dummy/training round ? The reason that I ask is it looks as though it has been cycled many Times from the damages to the rim and the primer looks to be something similar to a dummy dead primer ( round head nail )

Stand it up next to a 100% known .303. I bet yours will have a 1mm longer case. I believe it is a 7.92x57R Dutch MG round. Not what you'd call rare or even scarce, but far from common. The black primer seal designates a ball loading.

The top cartridge is a Federal cartridge for comparison:

During WW2 some captured Dutch 8x57R Schwartzlose cartridges were converted by RWS into Mauser 8x57RS sporting rounds. The rim was reduced to Mauser thinness by machining away the upper rim surfaces, which gave the cases a slightly semi-rimed appearance but retained the original case length and the Dutch primer and headstamp. It was then loaded with a soft-nose bullet bearing the Utendoerffer-RWS “U-in-shield” mark on its lead base.

With the soft nosed bullet, I wonder if this round has had the same treatment as described above in a thread from the International Ammunition Association.

My cartridge does indeed seem to be one of these converted cartridges. Thanks!

So 7.92x57mm JRS is a rimmed version of 7.92x57mm Mauser:
"The rimmed variant of the 7.92×57mm Mauser, the 8×57mm IRS, was developed later for break-barrel rifles and combination guns."

So it's not a .303 British cartridge at all. The reason I thought it was was because it came in a small lot of .303 British ammo I recently bought from Switzer's Auctions.
