Is anyone aware of a marking on an Enfield that would look like a bird?(eagle maybe?)

The brother of a friend has an Enfield that he has said he wants to sell, and he mentioned there was a bunch of stampings on it. One of these stampings supposedly looks like an eagle.

I am going to take a look at it this week once the brother comes back from a fishing trip.

In the meantime I have looked at all the books and websites that I know of including Amatikulu's (spelling?) site, and I can't find any mention of a bird like stamping.

Any ideas?

I don't know if it is a #1 or a #4 yet, I'll find that out when I take a look at it.

Pictures, Tbolt, I want to see a picture! :D

Aren't there a few SMLE's that were gathered and stamped with the Waffen stamp? I probably am totally off track.

Don't worry Lou, I plan to take pictures when I go see it.
I'm hoping that it hasn't been sporterized, but failing that i hope that only the wood has been cut.

Could be the Indian Post-Independance Ashoka Chakra Enfield receiver marking, when worn or badly stamped it can look a bit like a bird.

Wouldn't the Lee Enfield rifle automatically suffer from an "accidental discharge" when ever a Waffen stamp was attempted by German armorers?......I may be off track too:p

I'm really curious as to what the guy has based I what I have heard here.
If I am lucky he'll be willing to trade for it and I won't have to spend a penny for it.

Humpity hump

Waffenampt?

Unlikely, but with an Enfield, never say never.

Don't pay too much ... ;)

Every time one of these old girls shows up, it generates a boated load of posts … :D

We had a 19 page long thread last summer with lots of pics on a SMLE for sale at a well known Canadian dealer, complete with swastikas and WaA's. The thread presented evidence on both sides and it got a little emotional at times and finally I had to close it. ;)

Peter Ladler, Ian Skennerton and Brian #### also waded into this, to the point that an example of one of them appeared in Arms and Militaria magazine in an article by Brian Labudda.

German marked SMLE (real or fake?) http://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=24261

I know GunBoards in the U.S. had a bunch of threads on these things as well ….

Ahhhhhhhh …. I love collecting ….. :D

Regards,
Doug

Do you mean a No1 or No4? Some folks call the P17 an Enfield. It would have US acceptance marks that are eagle heads in the wood and some metal parts.

Top secret infiltration weapons, issued with British uniforms for use by crack SS teams assembled for Operation Sealion (the invasion of Great Britain). Or it could be like John Sukey says, but I like my idea better.:p

Going through my spare parts, I do have a front-sight guard for an M-1917 which is marked with the late-type US Ordnance Eagle head, but that's all. TIGERS, yes. Birds? None that I have seen..... yet.

Hi All

Just got back from a long day.
Anyway I checked out the mystery Enfield this morning.
It wasn't anything super special like a German capture or Indian marking etc.
It was good though, it is a sporterized 1944 Longbranch #4MkI* 79L series.
And to top things off the metal is in great shape plus the barrel is uncut so only the wood and associated metal bits would have to be replaced.
It will soon be added to my collection for future restoration.
