I just bought a magazine for my Enfield this morning from a fellow CGNer. Upon inspection the thing does not appear to have the usual "broad arrow" British acceptance mark usually found on the bottom of these things but it does have a bunch of markings on the spine, including one that is a circle with what I can only describe as "wings" punched on top\inside of it. I'm no expert on Enfields, but I've never seen this stamp before. Any idea what that could be ? thanks

Nope, the spring itself is a U shape rather than a Z shape (which I've never seen before), the thing hooks onto the forward part of the mag as well as two "rails" in the floorplate (which is marked with the broad arrow i'm familiar with). That being said, the "mistery" marking is definitely a O shape with a couple of teardrop shapes arranged like wings or an aircraft's propeller (end to end). Sorry I won;t have a digital camera available for some time ....

Long Lee mag

By the description of the 'C' shaped mag spring and the 'rails' on the platform, you have a Long Lee Enfield magazine.

The circle with the wings sounds like a 'cancellation' mark, usualy it is overstruck over the top of some marking. However, it can also be used as a divider or seperator mark between numbers eg. 2/4

Photos would confirm very quickly.

the spring gives it away, definately a pre ShtLE mag.

Thats a Cancellation mark!
Usually found on the reciever or the wood

Is it stamped over something else?

The rifle I have is a No1 Mk3* which came severaly bubbaed and missing a bunch of parts, including the mag. A fellow CGNer who knew I'm looking for No1 Mk3* bits and pieces to rebuild her was nice enough to pick up a mag for it at a good price (the thing has a nasty-looking dent on the underside of it but it does not affect function) at a gun show last weekend and sold it to me on monday. So the mag came by itself. It does fit the rifle mind you. I guess I'll keep my eyes open for a genuine BSA No1 Mk3* mag, preferably one that would have been made in or around 1917. The rifle will be a shooter, but i'm in no hurry so I might as well get the "correct" parts.

Cancellation marks don't mean something is wrong, just that the previous mark is no longer relevant.

I have a Ross that is a veritable mosaic of cancellation marks since it was issued to many different units, all but the latest one cancelled out.

I finally secured use of a digital camera so here it goes :

Sorry about the blurry pictures, I'm not the best ptohograph in the world ... LOL

Just a guess

Long Lee. that little bump on the front (lower) might be where the staple for the chain was attached. (early mags were chained to the rifle.
The follower is certainly for the earlier model
The 0^0 stamp means it was one of the 10% of stores inspected.
