I have a question that arose from another thread.

If I removed the pistol grip and installed a stock could it be reclassed as non-restricted? In writing it says a shotgun can be turned restricted/prohib/whatever if it is shorter than 18 inches, unless the parts are commercially made. You can also turn a shotgun prohib by cutting things down yourself. So technically can you alter or modify a restricted into a non-restricted by adding a stock, even if you made the stock yourself? I see it this way because you are not shortening it, you are making it longer.

I am interested in this because if I could make this into a non-restricted it would be neat to take on the quad or something. I have one in .410/.22 LR with the holster and wire frame stock. Its literaly mint. Made long after the one pictured below was and much better in design. Hard to find pics for it and I dont have any on here at the moment.

If it is possible youwould not have to make a stock you could just weld or permanantly fix the stock in place.

I was having this very discussion with my father at a gun show on Saturday he was looking at that same gun.

Part of the definition of a handgun is that it is designed to be fired with only one hand. Not having a grip/stock for the second hand could potentially make it more difficult to get it reclassified.

I'm not sure that it would, that's just something that may come up.

I don't think that'd be the problem. UBERTI makes a 'pistol carbine' that is a revolver with a stock, and it's sold here unrestricted. It COMES with a stock tho.

I don't know how easily the CFC will let you do it ... i think you'd have to call and ask. The problem will be there, not with the law per se. I'm not sure they have a process to do that and if they do it'll be a pain i expect. But .. they're the only ones who can tell you if you can do it or not. If you affix a permanent stock and the gun is therefore over the oal requirement... Its a non-restricted firearm. You'll just have to see if they'll be willing to reclassify it that way.
