Kind of an open question, but have at it.

What do you think is the best "uncommon" cartridge? You can define "uncommon" however you want, keeping in mind it should not be readily available at Walmart etc. Just give some reasons.

I like the 6.5x54 Mannlicher-Schoenauer, .358 Winchester and 9.3x62

I think they all kill very well, with relatively low recoil. But, especially the first two, have lost out due to magnum hype. By that I mean they are too slow.

I think the 284Win.This was the answer for 7mm in a short action back in the day that never got the respect it deserved.

.218 Bee! Of course.
How about the 16ga. I know its not really that uncommon, but its considered by many to be the best shotgun guage ever made and its quite hard to find a new gun chambered in 16. Also, ammo variety is getting scarcer and is not readily available at wally world.

I'm with you on the .358, but I do like all of the .35's. The Whelen will do the job on anything on this continent, and the .358 Norma is the only magnum worth a pinch.

The .250 Savage has always out performed its numbers as has the .300 Savage - though that has been superceded by its improved version - the .308 Winchester.

The old .303 British has generally been set aside, but it hits a deer like a hammer with proper loadings. If it were available in new and better rifles, I'm sure it would recover much of its ancient glory.

I'd agree with BIGREDD on the 25-20. I'd add the .356 winchester. As with many 35 cals in north america it was cursed from inseption and barely hangs on. Designed for tube magazines and nipping at the heals of the .358 winchester it was a great idea IMHO..

Another vote for the 257 Roberts and 358 Winchester. I have one of each and think very highly of them both.

I will nominate the 280 Remington as well (not intending to start anything now!)

6.5mm Rem Mag will do most of what most hunters need, and do it well. 270 Winchester performance from a short action!

You beat me to it.
I have to agree with the 356, though I've allways been enamoured with the 358 Win.
But I have a 356:D
I have to say though, my favourite Endangered cartridge is the 405 Win.
But I've never owned one.
Maybe soon though. ;)

cartridge

I love my Remington 8mm magnum. I have it in the Remington Classic, jeweled bolt etc. Not many of these around and it is only offered by Remington through their custom shop.

I can't figure out why it never became more popular.

Arch:)

Topic dear to my heart. 6.5x55, 7x57, 8x57, 303 British. All great cartridges. There are many more - 7.62x54. 7.65x53 Argentine .........

After thinking about it some more I would say the ulta mags. This was an awsome leap for the magnum world that never took off like I expected they would.I was excited about the beltless mag thing since the Imperial Magnums.Never owned or shot one but maybe someday.Im thinkin 338 ultra or 7mm ultra.

At the time of introduction the only available 8mm bullets were constructed for 8x57 velocities. Wounded game, meat wastage earned the new cartridge an underserved reputation.
