The one in the red bracket...... it has the A1-style rear sight, but it didn't have the usual indentation below the rear sight, and it features the brass defector like the Diemaco C7/ Colt Canada Model 715.

Anyone know who made this upper?

My educated guess would be a pre production C-7 prototype. This was to be the original C-7 rifle configuration. An "A-2" type upper with A-1 sights, as Canadian officials deemed the US style sights un-necessary.

Not having the indentation would allow a future conversion to the US style sights; or would allow the same (base)upper receiver to be used for production of both (Us and Canuck) rifles with modifications being made towards the end of the assembly line.

My two cents worth.

Could also be Colt "transition" model.

Around the time the M-16A2 was coming out, Colt had several export rifles half way between A1 and A2. You could get various rifling twists in the old slim barrel, A1 rifle with A2 furniture, A2 with the old sights etc etc. Various model numbers starting with 700, IIRC. Used to have an article from Small Arms Revue with a guide to these, but I don't know what happened to it.
