I remember seeing picture of troops in Africa armed with FALs, and one method of carry that I have seen is where they take the rifle and carry it over their shoulder, but they hold it by grasping the barrel near the muzzle end.

I wonder what that style of carry is called?

That seems to be the typical african carry. I have a buddy who is a PH over there and that is how he carries his rifles in the pictures I have seen of him.

A lot of ww2 soldiers carried their rifles in the manor described by the original poster. After the war they would hunt and carry their rifles the same way with a round p the spout which frightened those who had never serve overseas.
I believe it is just instinctive and well....easy.

Also easier for child soldiers to carry that way... there's an interview with one who now disarms landmines and he says that's why he carried his gun that way.

You mean something like this? (Example, North Korean-made AK-47 carried by a Khmer Rouge soldier)

My guess is because he has no sling and its the easiest way, puts more weight on the shoulder than in the hand, than if he were to carry it the way with the butt in the hand, arm extended and the muzzle on the shoulder.

Another, teenage soldier in Afghanistan’s national army.

That's the method I was asking about.
