So I am taking My Wife (Brand new Hunter) on a outfitted Bear hunt in Ontario, August 17th.
The oufitter stated that ThermaCell,s weren't recommended because of the smell. (I thought they were odourless) He is the guide however. He told me to bring Bug netting anyone have any good recommendations?

This will be my first bear hunt as well but I am certainly a seasoned deer hunter both rifle and bow.

Anyone have any tips or advice on what to bring along while hunting in August?

I am just looking to start my list for clothing and equipment.

Rain gear
Guns
ammo
3 sets of Camo
face nets
boots
running shoes
lots of socks
shooting sticks for the wife (and me):)
Climbers

Camper,

It is great that you are taking her hunting. I have been blessed to have my wife hunt with me for more than 40 years.

I hope you understand that an August bear will not be the best hide. The hair is very short at that time of year.

Be prepared to get bothered by lots and lots of bugs! I don't go bear hunting until the weather changes in late September early October. The bugs are just brutal in the summer. As far as smell goes, bears aren't the brightest animals in the woods. If you are hunting at a bait station, they are too conserned with eating, and not so much with what that smell is up in the tree. If you bait, they will come, regardless of odour. I've been smelled out on many occations, and just sit patiently, still, and take my shot when the time is right.
Good luck, and I hope you get your bear.

I would bring the therma cell. I havent seen any evidence a bear will avoid them. All the rain this year has produced a real bumper crop of skitters.

What area are you going to?

I have booked a hunt with Cedar Ridge Lodge right on Swaztika lake just south of Kirkland lake. I think I will bring the thermacell!

I would bring both (screens and therma cell)and see how the bears react. Then tell us when you get back which worked best.

after reading about the effectiveness of the thermacells on cgn, i picked up one a couple of weeks ago and have used it when calling coyotes over the past few days. they work very well and as a matter of fact, i'm leaving for a two week kayak trip on friday and am certainly taking the thermacell with me. they work great and if coyotes aren't bothered by the scent (?) am not certain that bears would be bothered by the thermacells. enjoy your hunt.

enjoy your hunt.

I bait bears for part of my living. I routinely spray my baits with musckol and deep woods off. I pee on them too. Bears get used to anything and 9 times out of 10 they know someone is sitting in the stand and come in anyway.

Try polyester pants, bugs can not bite through these at the tight spots like your rear or knees. Use your wifes nylons/ pantyhose pulled over your pant cuffs and arm cuffs so bugs can not crawel in or bite through. I use them same as gloves and a head net. ( but wash them first unless it your girl friends).

Also lots of bug spray as I hate my fingers and eyes covered.

I was introduced this year to the idea of thermacells by an bear guide/outfitter in Quebec with a huge exclusive hunt territory with portions in three management units. He believes they are necessary and effective for his clients when the black flys (early June) are thick and ravenous. I will be buying one soon.

He also recommended Watkins (white) insect repellent which I bought in Quebec as I was leaving for home (a little late to help me). I use it at the range and it seems pretty good.

Yeah the quebecers like that watkins stuff. I tried it but found croc-bloc to work a bit better, but the croc-bloc also has more smell.
