Yes Grizzly 8.5" are all raining over the Country :dancingbanana:
I got mine for Camp carry. Outdoor Boonies Activity Defense, chicken hunt ...

This long week end will be ammo testing.

Surprisingly this shotgun is a heavy ##### but the handling help to forget the weight

I made a comparison with a 28" 70's Remington wingmaster and a Beretta Urika 26" Semi Auto, all dry weight (unloaded)

Grizzly 8.5" 6 lbs 8.9oz

870 wingmaster 28" 7 lbs 7.0oz

Urika 391 Semi Auto 6lbs 12.6oz

In my quest for weight reduction/recoil increasen',I replaced my rear stock with a Wingmaster rear stock with the fancy flur de lise.I like the Dominion rear stock with the longer barrels (12.5/14 inchers)Something this small should be light, right? Also like manbearpig suggested,I replaced my magazine cap with a 870 one.No scale so I can't really attest to the weight savings.Just that it does feel lighter

It is pretty heavy for it's size.
Pretty close to an 18.5 inch Ithaca 37...

off topic but that's a nice looking scale at a good price.... Where did you buy it?

swap the rear stock (Hogue, Remington, Speedfeed, etc) and watch the weight drop significantly.

i dont have an accurate scale handy, but i would guess you could save nearly a pound on the factory 8.5" Grizzly by going with a short LOP Hogue buttstock and replacing the mag cap with a lightweight aluminum happy cap, and get it down to <6lbs. im also pretty sure the small metal plate behind the receiver is NOT necessary for a synthetic stock - your FRN synthetic stock is not going to split/crack, so thats another ounce :)

i HAVE just found a new use for the rear DA stock though. i was going to post a thread but ill just post it here:
i have a Wingmaster with an 18" 870P barrel and mag extension. the barrel is thicker than a standard 18.5" Express barrel, and the mag extension also adds some more weight up front. with the factory Speedfeed 870P stock, it was a quite muzzle-heavy. I just installed the DA stock on it, and it balances a LOT better now. so i suggest you keep the DA buttstock - which aside from the negative of being heavy, is quite well built - for your longer shotguns with mag extensions rather than just dumping it on the EE.

I just got back from Fabsports I wanted a Knoxx Stock , were out of stock .
Do you if ajustable Knoxx stock with pistol grip is a good choice for weight reduction ?
Do you replace the forearm stock too ?
Where Can i get those aluminum Mag cap screw ?
I am looking for something with a pistol grip

i think the Knoxx will add weight. not going to remove mine to check (its a PITA as i dont have the special tool), but theres a lot of plastic/aluminum and springs in there - its not a lightweight stock. itll also add some bulk.
also keep in mind that on just a bead sight shotgun, youll need to nearly fully extend the stock (~14" LOP) to be able to sight down on the bead properly. itll only work in a short LOP configuration if you have slightly taller sights than a bead - such as a blade or ghost rings.
another thing to consider: the Knoxx SpecOps stock, when fully collapsed, is roughly the same LOP as a Hogue short LOP stock. the Hogue short LOP stock on an 8.5" 870 is just a TINY bit over the minimum OAL (around 1/4" over). this means if you get an overzealous cop that fully collapses your Knoxx SpecOps stock and then pushes down on it to actuate the recoil absorption mechanism, your gun may actually compress below minimum OAL. is it likely youll find a cop that wants to charge you THIS badly? in Canada's current anti-gun climate, who knows. its not a decision ill have to make since i wont be putting a Knoxx on mine simply for weight/bulk reasons, im just putting this out there as something else to consider.

IMHO a standard stock - or a short LOP Hogue - is better for these little shotguns. itll keep it light, compact and snag-free so you can slip it into a pack.

Dang those things are heavy, they weigh as much as my 28" Ithaca 37! What we need is for DA to build us a short '37, either in the 13.5" Stakeout length or something super short ala Rico Tubbs' '37 from Miami Vice.

Just a 13.5" Ithaca barrel that could be fitted in Canada would be nice.

I weighted the stocks I had and Mag cap

Grizz stock assembly 1lbs 13.5oz
StockGrizz.jpg

Rem 870 wood stock 1lbs 4.5oz
StockRem.jpg

Difference 9 oz

Grizz mag cap 2.1oz
Grizzcap.jpg

Rem mag cap 1.1oz
Remcap.jpg

So on paper ,I should save 10oz if i install my Rem 870 stock and cap.
Let try it

5lbs 15.1oz looks pretty close if you do the math
GrizzRem.jpg

looks like i was pretty close :)

a short LOP synthetic stock is even lighter than that Remmy wood stock.
just weighed it, my plain Speedfeed synthetic stock is 1lb 0.5oz
an aluminum 'happy cap' is about 0.2oz (barely moves the needle on my scale). (to use one of these youll need to either do the ball detent mod, or use an O-ring or wave washer since it has the wingmaster style detents)
so with these, its another 5 ounces shaved off the weight - down to about 5lbs 10oz. thats nearly a pound lighter than the factory weight.

oh, and just weighed my triggergroups:
Wingmaster triggergroup is 5oz
Grizzly triggergroup is 4.5oz
i dont have an Express triggergroup to weigh because i got rid of them all.

average receiver mount sling plate is about .5oz

i cant simply weigh my different 870 receivers because my scale only goes to 600 grams.

I got my Hogue L.O.P Stock
Once I replace the Mag nut with the Billet one. I will have lost a whole pound.
With taxes, shipping, and other BS I should be just under $150 but, with what I removed, my wingmaster is now all black. So it's kind of a 2 for 1. Seems to hurt less to see it that way :D

In real life My grizzly REALLY feels lighter and a bit shorter (3/4" more would have been nice , but I should get use to it)
Also feel much more balance , and no more awful Ruber smell

if youre switching mag caps dont forget to do the ball detent mod on it.

now that you mention it the grizzly stock does smell kindof wierd. what is it with chinese plastic/rubber that makes it smell so horrid? maybe its all the toxic waste/lead/child laborer sweat thats infused in them. the scent of communism, lol.

why was your Hogue stock so expensive? did they ship it UPS?
i told you to phone in your order :D
when i ordered mine it came out to about $110 with all shipping/duties/etc, but that was a while ago.

black socks...

now that you made me look - his fly is open H:S:

Yeah, Black socks and open for business. I am an Animal Grrrr
Stock came up to $104 CAN + $19 of duty (I guess I pay more since I am in Quebec)
I just Noticed Dlask has them on their web for $85 + everything ... Next time

geez, i guess they raised their prices. id have to find my bill but when i purchased it was around $75 for the stock (+ exchange), around $15 shipping, then the customs handling fee and taxes.

sorry man, had no idea Dlask had them - they didnt back when i ordered.

still, one pound weight reduction from factory is pretty impressive.
i even unscrewed my sling swivel from the stock to shave that extra fraction of an ounce :D

Well I got the chance to weight a Knoxx SpecOps NRS stock
Thanks to Jetpilot and Fabsport

I also noticed that I forgot to add Hogue LOP weight
