Hi fellow CGN'ers,

I purchased a Steyr M1912 (manufacturered in 1917?) from an estate auction. Was really happy to do so, as I've wanted to own one for some time. A fellow range member had a Chilean version that he let me fire and I loved it.

Mine wasn't in the best of condition; slide and barrel serials do not match, it was refinished in black with gold accents and had odd aftermarket grips. Here's the auction description:

"Restricted Steyr Model 1911 Dated 1917 . 9 MM Steyr ? Cal 8 Shot Semi Auto Pistol w/ 130 mm bbl [ reblued finish with marks underneath, black grips, various parts have gold colored highlights and some markings ]"

Yet I didn't frown, I was quite excited and hunted for some 9mm Steyr ammo (9x23). I got some of these that have 2 X 8 rounds on stripper clips:

Man were they expensive!

I finally got time to go to the range today, so I took the Steyr and three boxes with me. Loaded up the mag with 8 rounds and attempted to put it in battery but the slide did not fully close. Here's some pictures of what I saw:

I tried a few times with just one round but the same thing happened. Checked the mag function and it seemed okay:

I then realized that they had a few Steyr 1912 pistols that were rechambered in 9mm luger however, the only way to identify these were by the "08" stamp on the slide (08 luger). I think this may be a 9x19 barrel. I put in a 9mm round in the barrel and it seemed to fit better. The pistol went into battery fully but when it came time to extract the round it failed to do so, so I had to drive a rod down the muzzle to get the round out.

My theory is that this was pieced together and a 9mm Luger barrel was used instead of a 9mm Steyr. I'd be happy because Ammo is cheaper but I'm certain the extractor and internal mag should be modified as well.

Am I right? Is there any way to tell?? Can I safely fire it??? Is it easy to mod the mag/extractor to work properly????

Please let me know what you think.

Be a no ( IMO) on the magazine and Extractor being modified... a Steyr setup only needs the bbl modified.

I dont know, i tried to put a 9x19mm snap cap in my 9x23 one after reading your comment. It does fail to extract

Edit: Dont mind me, im stupid

I have one, it digests bulk 9 x 19 quite handily. Perhaps yours is different?
Edit; I got a 9 x 19 bbl made up and installed it in a OEM Steyr...didn't change a thing otherwise.

I just tried playing around with some snap caps. Seems like it should work fine, except the round in the chamber extracts along with all the rounds in the mag, which go flying out (of course)!

Have you given the pistol a good going over and cleaning? The chamber in the barrel may be fouled. This would explain a 9x23 not going into battery.
A good scrub of the entire barrel with a brass brush and cleaning solvents should do it if it needs a cleaning.
The barrel looks a bit rough this may have caused pitting in the barrel. This may need more work. You should be able to look into the chamber and see.
I have used valve grinding compound, to hone the inside of a muzzle loader. A novice shooter had not cleaned the gun until the next season.....

Good suggestion. I cleaned the entire pistol with some CLP but perhaps I need something stronger. Barrel is okay but it has very little rifling left, which is not what I would deem strong at all. I'll see if I can take some pictures and post them.

Perhaps I need a new barrel?

***March 4th Update***

After examing the barrel I'm so convinced that it's for a 9x19 round and not a 9x23 that I'm willing to take the risk. Here's why:

The barrel has a lip inside that seems to fit a 9x19 round perfectly:

Here's the barrel with a 9x23 Steyr round:

Here are the rounds side by side (Luger on the left, Steyr on the right):

So I finally got time to go to the range and took my Steyr with me. I chambered 1 round of 9x19, took aim and fired...

It went bang and, almost immediately, I felt a pinch on my left cheek. Turns out the firing pin had struck me on the cheek and, along with the firing pin spring, landed on port table in front of me.

Im okay, but now I got another issue after sorting out the previous one. The round did fire (but missed the target?) so I'm good with it being a 9x19 pistol, but now I have to fix the firing pin and spring back into the slide:

I suspect that the extractor was not fitted properly so it didn't hold the firing pin well. My two options are:

1) Fix it and Risk it again.
2) Buy a new slide.

Suggestions/Comments/Insults?? Anyone remove the firing pin and install it again?

If it was me, having been struck in the face by the firing pin, I'd destroy that piece of junk. Like a dog that has already bitten someone. What are you waiting for...something more serious?

Finding a gunsmith with enough knowledge to work on a steyr hahn is probably the same as looking for a unicorn. Keep this one as a wallhanger and buy a matching properly fitted one imho. The chilean contract one show up once in a while on the EE for 500$ in pretty good condition

That firing pin is a sorry looking mess.
Stop trying to shoot the thing before you hurt yourself.

glad you barrel seems ok I wasn't so lucky. I managed to get a gerogeous Chilean one but someone tried to convert the barrel to 9mm mackarov from what I can tell cause 9x23 styer doesn't fit and 9x19 doesn't as well. been having a hard time finding a new barrel.

one is on my list to get I hope I find a good one sometime. How hare are parts to get have you found a source of replacement parts.

Just a slide, everything else is OOS, including the grips! :(

That sucks. I wish I knew if this was professionally done or not, which is why I took so many pictures. The rifling seems very low in this barrel.

Thanks for the links. Yes, the firing pin looks really crappy but I didn't notice it until it hit me in the cheek :)
