Hi fellow CGN'ers,
I purchased a Steyr M1912 (manufacturered in 1917?) from an estate auction. Was really happy to do so, as I've wanted to own one for some time. A fellow range member had a Chilean version that he let me fire and I loved it.
Mine wasn't in the best of condition; slide and barrel serials do not match, it was refinished in black with gold accents and had odd aftermarket grips. Here's the auction description:
"Restricted Steyr Model 1911 Dated 1917 . 9 MM Steyr ? Cal 8 Shot Semi Auto Pistol w/ 130 mm bbl [ reblued finish with marks underneath, black grips, various parts have gold colored highlights and some markings ]"
Yet I didn't frown, I was quite excited and hunted for some 9mm Steyr ammo (9x23). I got some of these that have 2 X 8 rounds on stripper clips:
Man were they expensive!
I finally got time to go to the range today, so I took the Steyr and three boxes with me. Loaded up the mag with 8 rounds and attempted to put it in battery but the slide did not fully close. Here's some pictures of what I saw:
I tried a few times with just one round but the same thing happened. Checked the mag function and it seemed okay:
I then realized that they had a few Steyr 1912 pistols that were rechambered in 9mm luger however, the only way to identify these were by the "08" stamp on the slide (08 luger). I think this may be a 9x19 barrel. I put in a 9mm round in the barrel and it seemed to fit better. The pistol went into battery fully but when it came time to extract the round it failed to do so, so I had to drive a rod down the muzzle to get the round out.
My theory is that this was pieced together and a 9mm Luger barrel was used instead of a 9mm Steyr. I'd be happy because Ammo is cheaper but I'm certain the extractor and internal mag should be modified as well.
Am I right? Is there any way to tell?? Can I safely fire it??? Is it easy to mod the mag/extractor to work properly????
Please let me know what you think.
