**UPDATE**
It seems the 223 would be the right choice.
Now what rifle would you recommend?
Something light, ideally 20" barrel but if it's 26'' with a decent weight (7-8lbs) it's ok.
Bolt action
Nice Wood or synthetic, might consider some sort of pistol grip.
Accurate of course.
Ideally detachable mag

Any suggestions?

ORIGINAL POST

Hi,
I'm looking to add another rifle into my collection but I'm not sure what caliber yet.
I have a 22lr semi auto and have a lot of fun up to 200 yard hitting 12" gong with no problem, it's cheap to shoot but not ultra precise.
I have a 308 that I usually enjoy shooting at ranges 400+yards in order to have fun.

So I would like to get your input on what caliber should I choose for ranges of 200-300 yards that is precise enough, cheap to shoot (-0,60$/bullet) and still have some punch to drop ground hog at 200+yards.
Calibers I have in mind:
22mag
7.62x39
223
...

I know some have pros and cons and I can't have a cheap ammo that shoots 1/4moa but still I'd like to find the 17hmr type for that range.
Please add other calibers I might have forgotten

.223/5.56,. Cheap to shoot for plinking. Accurate as hell for the small batch reloader with plenty of bullet choice. Tons of available options in tactical, semi-tactical, and hunting style firearms. Glass manufactured expressly for the ballistic curve in question. Nothing else in the calibre class come close.

^^^^This.

Agreed. 223Rem/5.56mm. I don't think you're going to get much precision out of 7.62x39 without reloading it.

The 22WMR is a wildcard to me... can't be reloaded for sure, and ammo availability seems spotty at times (lots of brands on the websites, nothing in stock usually kind of deal). Are there relatively accurate rifles made in that caliber?

I did have a 17hmr and liked it quite a lot but was restricted to condition and used it only if there was not too much wind, so that's why I included 22mag since it's a heavier bullet but I'm concerned about the precision at further ranges.
223 is what I have in mind for a long time and was thinking of the cz 527 but the mag seem a bit funky (feeding and mag release).

Is there any other caliber you guys would suggest other than the one suggested above?

might want to consider the 243. Great round if you ever decide to stretch out ranges and good for the ground hogs, coyotes, even deer sized game. Ammo isn't hard to come by either. Gonna be hard to beat the 223 for what you described though.

For what you describe, to repeat others, the 223 is the perfect choice - almost every answer given is "get a 223" - there is a strong message in that!
Reload for it and watch it shine even more - FWIW I have one and its my go-to plinker for up to 700 yds shooting 80gr

I did have the chance to try the savage 12 lrp in 243 shoots great but but didn't consider it for that purpose since the ammo cost is similar to my 308, extended ranges and hunting my savage 10 fcp-sr in 308 will do the job.
Thanks

Thanks for the reply
Savage 12 I've looked at it but it seems a bit heavy at 10lbs for what I'm planning on doing with it. I already own a savage that weight 11-12lbs so I know the quality and looking for something lighter.
Tikka T3X I will probably look at it but I already have a tactical style of rifle and I'd like to get a woodstock version.
Browning X-bolt seems nice and they have wood version but not in 233 from my early search. I don't know this model and will look further more.
Rem 700 Tac not a big fan of remington mania, I'm sure they are good rifle but the tac is a bit too heavy for such a compact package I know and have seen that these needs a bit of work to make them as accurate at least for my taste compared to other out of the box rifles.
Thanks for the replies I'd be looking for more suggestion as well.
