A guy I work with has a Possesion only license and owns a couple of long guns. If he wanted to upgrade to PAL what would be have to do? would he need to take the safety course again?

btw I think he's expires in 2013 so he must've renewed it last year...I thought CFO doen't issue POL's anymore?

POLs can be renewed.
Under the current amnesty, expired POLs can be renewed.
If he has passed the CFSC, he should be able to put in an application, and change to a PAL.

My POL expired and i did not realize till I went to purchase new ammo.
He can skip the course and just challange the test. $35-$50???
He can then apply for his PAL.
The cost for the application is free for now.

To Upgrade from a POL to a PAL?

I foolishly never took out a PAL.

I now want to upgrade and challenge the test. I am confident that I can pass it and I hate to spend the $$$ for a course, Alter 65 years of handling firearms, if I can't pass the test, then those years have been wasted.

So, the question is - How do I go about taking the test? and is the cost quoted above standard?

Many thanks,:)

Go to the CFC website and, on the right menu, select Firearms Safety Course. It will then guide you to the general number you have to call. Once you call (on weekdays business hours), they will give you another number (in your immediate area) where the course and exams are given by instructors.

Then, all you have to do is call up the instructor at that number you just received and find out about the closest date. The cost for the exam-only (challenge) is exactly 40$. HOWEVER, there are trick questions... technical questions that are only explained in the manual. You will have to read the manual before challenging the exam, even if you're a highly decorated WWII Commando. I thought I was good too (and was), but the technical BS in the manual would've failed me without reading prior to the challenge. ;) The course manual for both restricted and non-restricted is available on these forums.

Remember: when challenging the exam, it's always safety first... and they literally want you to over do it in the name of safety!

I challenged the exam for $25 in June of 08; I had let my POL expire. There were four of us challenging the exam so it took about 2 hours to do the written and the practical and to wait for the examiner to mark them. As others have pointed out, read the book! As well, there are 5 or so videos on the cfc website that are very helpful.
