I'm trying to put together my first upper for my AR. Normally, I just buy a complete upper and call it a day. However, this time is a little different. I purchased a lower from ATR, and while I wait for it to arrive, I've been picking up parts. I have a 20" HBAR barrel with a pooched gastube and no handguards. I also have a Colt A1 upper, but it is a large hole model. It has no forward assist or case deflector (it is an early model), but I do need to get a door assembly for it, as there is none. Honestly, I had planned on doing a flattop for this, but I have this upper, so I would like to make it work. Has anyone used the bushing to make the large hole upper fit the small lower? Is there a certain way that it goes in? Where can I get one of these bushings, as well as the gas tube and door assembly?

You can get one from Brownells its made by dpms. Its a pin and a bushing you use the bushing in the uppers hole to make it match the lower ,there 7.50$.

Check with Questar, IIRC, I think they had some listed on their website. In order to assemble your upper, you do know that you require a proper receiver block for use with a bench vise? Otherwise you'll defintely run the risk of crushing or otherwise damaging your upper. Check out the build thread at AR15.com and they walk you through the process.
