Hi, I am currently in the process of building my first AR and I purchased a basic upper receiver clam shell vise block. The problem is it doesn't fit with my VLTOR MUR-A1 upper receiver. Are there any alternatives I can buy in Canada that will secure my upper receiver for installing an ALG Defense rail and a muzzle device?

I know that Guissele Reaction rod would be the way to go but I would like to know if there are cheaper alternatives.

Thank you

As soon as I read the title, before reading your post I said to myself "geissele reaction rod".

Get it. It's worth every single cent you'll pay for it.

+1, it is THE BEST upper tool you can get, it's strong, won't slip under pressure and it completely bypasses the upper altogether and puts the torque right into the barrel extension.

I only have one upper right now and it's worth being able to mess around with stuff, but with all AR's, you'll always end up buying more ;)

There are a couple different manufacturers that make similar tools to the reaction rod. I don't remember the name of the one I have but it is definitely the best tool for the job. I also have a Wheeler Engineering vice block that can grab the pic rail or pin through the take down pin holes.

Just put the barrel in the vise with wood soft jaws and torque on the receiver. That's how we did it in the CF before those fancy receiver clam shell things.

+1 on the Magpul BEV block. Almost half the price of the Geissele and works on both upper and lower receivers.

The benefit of the rod only approach is that the upper receiver can be placed at any angle within the vice extension.
That is helpful for doing other stuff to the upper like front sight bases, gas blocks, & hand guards.
The fact that it just slides on and off is handy too.

Honestly though, unless one was planning on making wrenching on ARs a regular occurrence, it is a little overkill.
If I already had a clam-shell vice block and an upper that didn't quite fit due to being a billet upper, and wasn't planning on churning out completed upper receivers, I'd just take the dremmel to the clam-shell and trim where required (And that is precisely what I've done in the past).
