Good day,
I live in Montreal, Quebec and often find myself a "rare bird" as a hunter/shooter in an urban setting. I came to shooting by way of hunting, I came to hunting by way of cooking, and everyone knows I cook almost exclusively game meat so whenever the topic of hunting/shooting comes up ... I'm thrown into the fray. My responses to the anti hunters and anti shooters are varied. The one argument gaining most traction in the past years due to food trends is that harvesting my own Moose and Deer does not result in any rainforest being cut down and often involves greater care and interest in our local land, forest, and ecology.
I have been hunting for >10 years, shooting restricted for 10 years, and reloading for 3 years. My babies are a Blaser R8 with two stocks, an Attache stock and a Professional stock. The 3 barrels for these stocks are a fluted 6.5x55mm mated to a Swaro Z6 1.7-10, a 30-06 mated to an older Swaro 2.5-10x42, and a 9.3x62mm mated to a Swaro Z6 1-6. I chose these traditional calibers for several reasons. The two main calibers of 6.5 and 9.3 are European to fit the rifle and meant for deer and moose respectively. They were also meant to be non-magnum calibers with similar trajectories; my first Blaser was an R93 with two barrels, 257 and 300 Weatherby ... the 300 kicked hard and , and the 257 kicked in the nastiest snappiest fashion. Neither were conducive to shooting round after round. The 30-06 is meant to be a mid caliber to the other 2 and is intended to cover both deer and moose while ensuring cartridge availability anywhere in the world. I also have a CZ ZKK-602 375H&H which is a pleasure to shoot in iron sights, and a Sauer 202 in 7mmRemM toped with another Swaro 2.5-10. The Sauer is my oldest friend and most natural to shoot.
My reloading gear of choice is Redding. I mostly shoot pistol as target and "physiological" practice, keeping my mind and body used to the sound and feel of gunshot helps to maintain a capacity to remain calm, loose, and non-flinching with my rifles. I'm a member at CRAFM in Montreal and was a member of CTVSP in the past. One more word on the "Weatherby Kick", even my 375H&H is more pleasant to shoot than my 300 Weatherby was, I can shoot a box of 375H&H with no issues and great pleasure. Nothing however has ever felt as unpleasant to me as the snappy 257 Weatherby kick. Great trajectories on the 257 and 300 Weatherby, essentially flat to 330 yards for hunter's purposes ... but not great for putting lead down range and getting to know your rifle well.
