Hi guys. I need your help.

I’m currently at the range with a LIVE round stuck in my Remington 700

The bolt chambered the round all the way in but the bolt handle wouldn’t go down.

Now it’s stuck mostly in the upright position but not all the way up, and will only go down about 10 degrees. So I can’t get the bolt back out to get the round out. And I can’t get it engaged to fire the live round so I can bring it to a smith

I tried tapping the bolt handle with a piece of wood to get it back in the upright position, but now the bolt knob has broken off. I still have about 2” of bolt handle to work with.

I wish I was making this up.

Suggestions?

You have no option, take it to a gunsmith, you have done enough damage... as previously stated, it can not fire with the bolt not closed.

Take the same piece of 2x4 and tap it open.
Don’t use the 2x4 like a hammer though .. lol
Rest the 2x4 against the bolt and tap that with a hammer.

I guess you didn't read the original post... you are not alone - post 3 missed it too.

Definitely take it to a gunsmith who is very familiar with Remington actions. If the round was fired and the bolt broke off the barrel would likely have to be removed from the bolt assembly. This may relieve some of the pressure that is keeping the piece of bolt in the position that it is in. If the remaining part of the bolt cannot be turned to the dis-engage position the only options would be to discard the parts that are not performing as designed. A gun smith may have other options like drill the broken piece to relieve the pressure and stress. I would think that this assembly is pooched and may have greater flaws or stresses that would render the unit unfit for use. Be careful and don't try and do it yourself.

If it is a factory rifle I would guess it was a reloaded cartridge not properly sized.
Yes, that sounds about right.
I thought if he had enough of the bolt handle left, he could tap it open , to remove the stick case.

Just out of curiosity and wanting to learn, how would you remove the stuck case?

But would that cause the bolt to get stuck to the point that he broke the bolt handle off trying to get it open?

I've had reloaded brass that wasn't sized enough for me to close the bolt all the way, but there was no issue opening the bolt and ejecting the cartridge.

I can't help but feel like either something broke, or the OP was trying WAY too hard to close the bolt to get it jammed up like that?

I have lost count on how many Remington bolts I have seen break off during the attempt to tap them open.
