Hello All,

I am about to leave to go shoot some new shotguns I bought at the gun show. When I bought them I recieved 4 free boxes of shells 12g 2 3/4". My new grizzly shoots 2.3/4 but my wifes excort tactical style shotgun when I was cleaning I noticed it says 3" is it safe to shoot 2.3/4 through hers? I do not want anything to go wrong when we go and figured I would double check with you all first.

Thanks

Shooting shells shorter than the length on the barrel should be fine on all modern shotguns.

It is when you try to shoot shells longer than the length indicated that you run into problems.

Thanks, I figured it would be ok since they said the same thing at the show, figured it is always good to get another persons opinion just to be extra careful.

I'd suggest skipping your planned shoot today and instead, do a bit of reading and research. Asking questions like you did before you go was a good idea but a question like that says a lot about your knowledge of shotguns - might be safer to get a little more familiar with your new toys before you go out and play with them.

I did look into it a lot and found multiple sites saying it would be ok... i do not like to believe everything I read online as there is tons of b.s. I figured I would check an extra time here from people that go shooting, I took it out today worked great loved every minute of it. I have very little knowledge of shotguns and dont try to pretend that I know a lot.

Wasn't this covered during your firearms course? I know mine covered it

My safety course covered this, but I'm not aware of any stringent legislation on what actually gets taught.

The issue here on chamber length: the force chamber is farther from the breech on sg's made to take 3" and 3.5" shells.
This force camber necks down in size. The risk being that too long a shell would open the crimped end into the necked down area and cause the projectile to jam and potentially cause a dangerous overpressure condition.

I'm sure taking a little flak from jerks online is better than having something blow up in your face, so good on you for asking.
:shotgun:G:

Try not to feed the trolls.

It was covered.... but better safe than sorry you can;t expect people to remember everything 100% unless you would like to go word for word on what you were taught if you seem to have such a great memory. I am sure you have asked a question on here at some point.

I agree with comments above. Lets encourage everyone to asks questions here and not cause them to hesitate in participating in this or any forum. If CGN is for all members and not just the long standing or most posts kind, then let each have their say or question raised.

Hear! Hear! X2!! Well said. Safety first. We were all noobs once!

It is the newbie section after all, then people get all uptight when someone asks a newbie question lol. I know my PAL course covered the shell length but I am sure there are other things that I forgot. I keep my non and restricted manuals I got from the course by the throne, never hurts to review.

It is a firearms forum......you learn by asking questions , that is how everyone learns . CGN is like any internet site ; most on here are firearm owners and want to help.....others are internet trolls who try to build themselves up by trying to provoke argument and tearing others down . Ignore the trolls on here , report them if required , but feel free to ask any firearm related questions as there are alot of experienced shooters on here who are happy to help you answer your questions . As others have commented , two and three quarter inch shells are fine in your shotgun.....Take Care and ENJOY your shotguns....

Shotguns can be complicated for a new shooter. I know I got my PAL last year and shotguns were a complete mystery, there are so many variables with shells, shot, slugs, barrels, and choke tubes. It will make your head spin, so I know where the OP is coming from. My first gun was a shotgun as well, this site and shotgunworld helped a ton. The good thing is, once you understand them a bit, there is nothing more fun then a shotgun.

When teaching the shotgun ammo part of the CFSC I always take extra time because there is a lot of confusing material and some elements aren't really covered in the standard slides (e.g. dram equivalents and shell length markings + why it is important not to mix them up).

I like your icon also. Ask away.I envy you can shoot this time of the year. Every place for shotguns is closed down around here.
They never covered anything about shell lengths in the CFSC I had to take to hunt here but they never even covered that bullets were made of lead in the class and had to give the answer to half the class as they had no idea. That and the guy was telling us that a 30 caliber bullet was for a 22 till he got caught by a couple of us.

EXCELLENT question... and yes fire away. It is safe to use 2-3/4" shells in a 3" chamber. Remember to always bring with you your PPE eqpt. ie: Eyes ears protection. Also check your backstop ! Also pick up your spent shells and yea that should cover things . And take pics and post them here.
