Hi. I have a leupold mark 4 with 65 MOA total adjustment. 32.5 moa each way. I have heard that the last 10% of the adjustment is the most unreliable. That puts me at 26 MOA up or down accounting for the unusable extreme 10%. Any truth to this from experience?

I would like to zero at 100 M and dial out to 800 M. I would need a 20 MOA rail to do this if the above is true.

Without the above 20 MOA rail I would need to use a 300M zero which I do not want to do.

If the the last 10% of travel statement is not true then I would be able to zero at 100M and getting out to 800M would be no problem as that literally maxes me out. 32.6 moa to get there.

Thoughts?

The last 10% would probably be fine. It’s definitely not the optimal range to operate any optic though.

I would see where the rifle/optic zeros at and go from there.

The last 10% isn't "unreliable", what happens is at the extremes of your elevation "up" or "down" the Mark 4 system contacts the scope body ID and instead of moving "up or down", the system begins to ride the ID pushing it to the side. This is the same reason that every adjustment of wind age diminishes your usable elevation.

Zero the rifle first. You really don’t know how much elevation you’re going to have left until you do that. The chances of being 1/2 wrap or more from center are good; but which way?

Sighting in for 300 yards won’t gain you elevation adjustment. It just uses it up in advance.

Exactly. On my custom 300WM the scope zeroed at +70 MOA in the scope (of 100 total MOA available) when used with the original 0 MOA base. That didn't work for me so I had ATRS make me a custom +40 MOA rail. Voila. Now I have 70 MOA of elevation to play with which will get me well out past where I could ever need to be.
