Use my Model 700 bolt in a buddy's rife?

I've got a Remington Model 700 243 and my buddy has a Model 700 308 without the bolt.

He says he can find the bolt where he hid it in the attic, but if he doesn't would it be a bad idea to use my bolt in his rifle without having a 'smith check the headspace?

He stashed it away for security reasons.

"...stashed it away for security reasons..." Put it some place safe and forgets where? Everybody does that.

been there done that now I stash all bolts in one place........just cant remember where that is!
