Hey guys. So I just got back from my first day out shooting!!! It was great!!! Me and a couple buddies went and set up some targets in the woods and went to town.

So now my question. We just burned through a few hundred rounds of .22LR, now I know centerfire brass can be re-loaded and it is always good to save and pick up. But since we were out in the woods, and I dont like leaving a mess, I picked up all our .22 brass. So is there anything that it can be used for or anything that can be done with it. Or should I just toss it out with the trash?

One of two things. You could keep it to sell as scrap. Clean brass is not too bad of a price. I salvage brass and aluminum to trade for clean lead.

Or

.22 RF cases can be swaged into .224 bullets for centrefires. A friend of mine does it, and the results are surprising. That's how Joyce Hornady got his little business off of the ground.

cleaning up

I think congratulations are in order here for having the initiative to clean up after your selves. Yes it'll take a while to accumulate any weight of .22 casings but scrap brass prices are only going to go up over time!

Thank you! I am sure we did leave a couple spent casings out there. I just hate it when you seen heaping amounts of them. Its really not that hard to spend 5 min and make it look like a war was fought there.

Cleaning up is very responsible of you. I wish people at my range would do the same for the .22 casings. Sometimes there are just loads of them on the concrete and on the benches. If you step on them the wrong way you can go for a real fall.

Fixed it for ya. :)

Really at the range? I thought that would be automatic. I know people are more likely to leave them in the bush since theres nobody around.

Ummmm uh.... yeeeah.... Joyce Hornady was a guy. I will relay to you exerpts from they History of Hornady Manufacturing printed in the 4th Edition Hornady Handbook of Cartridge Handloading. I swear, I'm not rubbing your nose in it.

"'Ten bullets thought the same hole' as the philosophy of Joyce Hornady, the company's founder. This idea of accuracy and perfection has continued from he first bullet to today.

Nebraskan Joyce Hornady, an ardent shooter, constantly needed a suppy of good, accurate bullets. While commercialy available bullets were usable, Joyce felt that better bullets could be made. Using his [take note of that] training as an engineer, he [there it is again] and Vernon Speer [that name rings a bell] built a machine that converted empty .22 rimfire cases into bullet jackets and then into bullets. Advertised in the National Rifleman, these bullets sold well all over the country."

I once worked with a guy in Montana called "Sparky." Boy howdy, did I look stupid when I asked what his real name was. Legal name, on the birth certificate and all Sparky Ross.

My mistake if that's the case. I was on the phone with hornady last week and an automated message was giving the history of the company and I would swear they said she.

:) Totally understandable. I guess Joyce is normally a female name... in most places anyhow. :D So naturally your brain must want to hear things that would make sense. I still find it weird. There's a guy around the area here named Claire... biggest lumberjackiest, honking bearded thing you ever saw. Some people oughta be smacked when they name their kids.

Life ain't easy for a boy named Sue...

"...thought that would be automatic..." Some shooters think their mommy's follow them around cleaning up their mess.
"...sell the scrap brass..." Takes a great deal of it to make it worthwhile. Current scrap value is less than $1 per lb.
"...Joyce Hornady..." Pee'd standing up.

that doesn't necessarily mean anything lol

OK, that's enough cheap shots. Also... mommy's is the possessive form. Mommies, the plural form is what you are looking for. No apostrophe in peed.

Why can't everyone wrote English good like I does? :nest:
