I am getting ready to man up and start reloading. I have come across a nice used Lyman S-T turret press that someone from the range is selling for $75. My question is, from your guys experience is it worth spending a little bit extra and getting myself a new in the box Lee Classic package to get started up or should I get the $75 Lyman S-T turret press and just buy the rest of the items needed ? Which of the 2 presses is better ? What are the things to watch out for with either press ?

Also, if I did buy the Lyman S-T turret press, what else is need to get myself started in reloading??......keep in mind that price is a concern.

The Lyman turret does not auto-index, so you have to manually turn the turret to the next station, IIRC (but I could be wrong as happens many times:D)

What is the Lee Classic Turret package? Does that kit come with the Classic Turret or the old style aluminum base turret?

Anyways, I have a Lee Classic Turret and really like the smoothness and easy of set-up and operation. With its auto-index and the Safety Prime and Pro-Auto Disk Powder Measure (bought separately), 150-180 rds per hour is easy at a relaxed pace. I did not buy a kit, BTW.

With Lee pistol 4-die sets, I like the .38spl, 9mm, 40cal and 45acp ammo it makes as well. Lee also gives great warranty service, if ever anything goes wrong. No issues with mine and I've loaded a few thousand rounds.

I don't believe the Lee Classic Turret (newer cast iron press) is sold in a package by Lee. The press just comes by itself. This press seems to get better reviews than the older style turret. It goes for around $85

The Lee Deluxe Turret press kit/Deluxe Reloading Kit is the older Lee turret (cast aluminum) with scale, auto disk powder measure etc.. No dies. The kit is around $105

Both Lee turret presses auto index.

Okay, sounds like I should stay away from the used Lyman then. Sorry, I am a bit confused by the different Lee presses and kits available so I worded my OP wrong.

I think I will re post a new question on what is the best press to get started out with, that won't break the bank.

Thanks, I got my answer from this post though about the Lyman press since it does'nt auto index.

For a single stage kit I would recommend the Lee 50th anniversary kit $82, or Breech Lock Challenger kit $98 (they are the same except different priming tools).

I have handled but not loaded with the Lee turrets. I will be ordering the Classic Turret soon.

I'd go with the steel Lyman as opposed to the alum.(pot metal) Lee, although neither would be my first choice. Look around for a used Rockchucker, or bite the bullet and get a Forster Co-ax.
