Used purchase advice

I'm just looking for some questions I should be asking when I purchase a used handgun...?

Specifically I'm going to be purchasing a BHP in 9mm
but as this will be my first used purchase I'm not sure exactly what information I should request from the seller.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! :)
 
How many rounds fired, are you the original owner, any gunsmithing/home gunsmithing done on it? What modifications done to it? Any dings, scrathes blemishes? Does it function 100%? Has it been refinished/reblued? Why are you selling it? Any problems with the gun?
 
A good/honest seller will not avoid any questions you may ask. You will want to ask:

About the condition of the finish of the gun

# of rounds it has seen

If seller is the original owner and if not do they have any info of past owner

Has it had any ejection or feeding problems and if so with what ammo.

Get as many pics of it as possible.

Bear in mind that lots of owners do not know everything about the gun's past history (if they are not the orig. owner), and even though it was well cared for it could develop a problem in the future (ie. weak recoil spring, etc.).

Do the best fact finding mission you can without putting the seller through excessive hoops, especially if you don't really intend on buying it.

Also if you can be as sure as possible it's the type of gun you want before you buy. Handle and try a similar gun if you can
 
There must be a certain degree of trust, without having to ask so many questions. A 3 day money back guarantee is a great way to put the seller in the best light. Those that have nothing to fear will agree instantly. The is a fiduciary duty for a seller to make known to the buyer any defects that he/she may know about the item being sold.... I have purchased hundreds if not thousands of used items on the internet and have had little trouble over the years. Especially where there is a feedback system in place and the seller has at least five or ten positive feedbacks and no negatives.

I have found the CGN crew to generally be a solid group of guys/gals and am honoured to be a member of the group.

Morgayne, the BHP is an excellent choice for a lady. The SAS used it for years. It's still one of the most comfortable and compact high capacity guns you can carry and shoot, especially so for a lady.

If you're going to shoot it for a while then flip it buy used. If you're going to keep it for a good long while buy new. Buying used is a gamble, sometimes you luck out, other times you get stuck with a lemon that doesn't quite work right. Besides just looking you might want to shoot it and check for functioning, but that's not easily done. Round count isn't that easy to tell either, you have to have faith in what the seller is telling you. Otherwise you're stuck getting a gunsmith to look at it and will likely end up paying the same as new if it has to be fixed or if you need some parts (barrel) changed.

For a lady there aren't a whole lot of choices in guns that will fit your hand as nicely as the BHP, so I'd say buy once and buy new.

Also if you'd like to trim down the grip profile get some Spegel grips, they're thinner than the stock grips and really nice looking. Some Novak low profile sights make quite a difference too, as well as removing the magazine safety for a much better trigger pull and a commander style hammer. That's about all you need besides tons of ammo! Wait until you get into AR's then you can really start accessorizing :):):)
