I have opportunity to purchase a used Rem R1 1911 45acp for under $600 or a New GIRSAN MC 1911 for $579 + taxes
Girsan is put together very very well. Everything is tight and for lower cost as new gun appears to have good quality.
The R1 I haven't handled, seems to be a lot of mixed reviews and many issues.
Any opinions or actual experience with these two 1911's would be most appreciated

No experience with either of these 1911's, but I would also consider a Norinco, and if you're not a fan of them, a S.A.M.
Wolverine has SAM 1911's starting at around $475, with free shipping.
I have a SAM Omega 6 in 40S&W that is an excellent gun, and very accurate.

I'd take the one without any firing pin block safety 'stuff' in 'em. ;)

I have 2 SAM's, a 9mm Omega 6, and a .45 Thunderbolt, and love them both. No issues, great out of the box. I also have a Girsan clone of the 92f, and it has been a great gun as well, so I have no reason to doubt the quality of the Girsan 1911.

2 totally different things. I never did like the grip on the Girsan and ended up selling it. Trigger wasn't anything great either.

Trigger on the R1 isn't any great hell either, but it's a 1911 and so can be improved. Unless you dig the GI look, you can probably do better.

R1 has firing pin block as well, if that matters. I disabled mine.

I no longer recommend the shooters arms stuff, as I had issues with every single one that I owned, one was a complete show stopper too.

STI, Ruger - watch the EE. There are still new Spartans kicking around too. Great value for the money. I had a 9mm commander that I would have kept if it was a 45 ;)
