As I wait for the R18 MK3 to come out.

I want to purchase a 5.56 rifle but am hesitant to pull the trigger. My thinking is either a used WS and then put some upgrades in it…… pick up one of the other Canadian offerings.

Thoughts? Is it worth it to go the WS-MCR route?

Raven has been flawless. Crypto is available and showing to be an excellent performer. Had the Siberian, sold it prior to really getting many rounds thru it. WK180 I personally have not had issues with. Pick a budget and go!

one reason i think the crypto is best out of all is because of how easy it is to replace parts. Of any one of these fragile canadian companies close their doors and go out of business you can replace broken parts. Propietary parts availability are dependent on the sucess of these small companies.

If you are hesitant to pull the trigger why are you buying a rifle?

Buy an MRA Renegade then you don't have to worry about semi auto prohibition.

100% the Crypto is going to flourish!

There is 1 receiver set left at RangeView.... Build the rifle how you want and be damn near right where you would be buying a complete unit thru them..

I went with the full build from g4c and i plan on upgrading part by part over the next couple years and then saving the parts i take off as spare. Started with getting rid of the ugly stock it comes with, next the trigger

Trigger Tech duty is a great option / value.

As someone with 8 rifles in the sin bin including 5 ARs that I have not been able to shoot for 4 plus years, I quite like the straight pulls. I have an SBI in 556 and an MRA in 7.62. Both were reasonably priced. If anything they shoot more accurately than my semi autos. They allow me to use some of the optics and accessories that would otherwise be sitting doing nothing. I have plenty of ammo that would otherwise stay in the safe.

I dont find having to manually operate every shot a big deal. It slows down my ammo consumption and makes me a little more careful with each shot.

So you may think that they are a massive waste of money and over priced and you are entitled to your opinion. However in my experience they are a valid semi auto substitute that will remain non restricted for the foreseeable future. To each their own.

My reasoning is that with the renegade over 1500$, you can get the same accuracy, manual bolt cycling from like a ruger ranch.

or if you put that same amount into a bolt action non modern style rifle it will be much much better.

Yes, but I did not pay that amount of money (I paid half that for my SBI LPC), and I still get that AR look and feel and can use optics and accessories that would otherwise sit unused if I bought a Ruger Ranch or non military bolt.

Its definitely a compromise. At the time of purchase it seemed that the "buy back" would go ahead and that Canadian 180 platforms such as the WK were not reliable.

Like I said each to his own but several of my shooting buddies have tried my straight pulls and really like them too. Sure I would rather take out my C7A2 clone. I just did a PWT with the military (and dammit only got 64 out of 65) which reminded me how much I miss shooting a real semi auto. However I really enjoy what I purchased and highly recommend others look at this option. Have you tried one Hoppka47?

Unfortunately no. The receiver set is already 1000 dollars and that doesn't include the 6 mags you need to buy which is 240 dollars plus tax. Then it's at least 200 for a complete bolt carrier group, 125 for a lower parts kit, buffer, buffer tube and buffer weights is at least another 150, 60 for a stock, then you need a barrel, barrel nut, gas tube, gas block and hand guard which is at least around 500 dollars. All together that brings you to 2275 dollars plus tax and shipping. shipping will also be higher because you can't get this stuff all from one place.

If you think that isn't bad enough, I purposely left out the top charging handle, dust cover, and flash hider which is at least another 100 dollars plus taxes and shipping.

I've got 1500 rounds through my SRV2, it has been absolutely flawless and I've gotten 1.5 moa from pmc bronze 55gr @100yds. only thing I would change out is the trigger and stock, the zhukov stock is ass

I hear your position. Money can be saved or spent above beyond what you have posted. However you have pretty much painted my point. Spend an extra 200-500 and you can have a rifle built with higher quality parts than a factory rifle. Many people do have parts kicking around. Lots of parts can be bought 2nd hand saving you even more money or getting a person higher quality parts at a cheaper cost.

One stop shop.. Red Deer Shooting Center, 5% tax, everything in stock in various levels of quality.

The hate of the Canadian 180's including the WK-180C is heavily overblown here. There have been failures, which isn't good, however the preponderance of evidence is very clear that these failures are very rare, and there are many guys with 3000, 4000, 5000 rounds through them with zero issues. Cleaning out the gas system periodically seems to help as well.

I agree with the previously expressed sentiment of pick a budget and go. If you're new to modern sporting rifles, maybe get a cheaper one and see if you even like the style. You can always sell it and buy a more expensive one later, if you really want to.

I really enjoyed running an MCR.

Handful of decently priced ones out there, and room to toss in a trigger (which would be the biggest upgrade needed)

It will do great job for what will be the standard use for most of us up north

If you want a “go to war” gun - drop that extra 1.5k for an x95 and so forth

I with that was true but the issue is I don't see a 18.6 inch or 20 inch barrel in 556 in stock besides the carbon fiber 1000 dollar one.

X95 is probably the cheapest actually battle proven design unless you want to rock an sks.
