when i bought my remmy 1100 i also bought 3 boxes of ammo for it all steel shot but i want to know when to use them i know duck hunting over water and all that but its more the range i want to know what i have is 12G 1oz shot #4 made by federal it also says hi-brass on the box the next box says 1 1/4 oz #1 magnum and the third box is 1 1/4 oz BB classic magnum

I have used steel shot to shoot coyotes while waterfowl hunting ... however it is not my ideal ammo choice. Each year all my old steel or slower steel that I really don't think I am going to use I take crow hunting and use it all up.

I wouldn't recommend using it for anything but waterfowl. It's up to you but I wouldn't bother wasting it. You could probably sell it or trade it for some lead that might be more useful.

Just my opinion...

The 1 oz #4 would be good for most shots on ducks, except close in stuff. The rest are some pretty heavy loads. Goose loads for the most part. A clean hit on a duck at less than 30 yards with those and you might have nothing left but a good story. Having said that, a novice hunter who often only gets a few pellets in the bird might do well to use larger shot that will bring the bird down with only a few pellets, rather than only injuring it.

Generally speaking, though, those rounds are best suited for longer shots at tougher species.
