USGI 1911 mag disassembly?

A buddy of mine was cleaning out his basement and came across a mag. He called me and I recognized it as a 1911 GI. I took it home and it looks like someone filled it with axle grease! Is there any way to get it apart for cleaning? the base plate is welded so Im stumped. I tried to pull (gently) the follower out the front of the mag to no avail. Help?

Push the follower down into the mag. Insert a punch through one of the holes on the side of the mag. Invert mag, follower should fall out. Release punch while hold thumb over mag mouth. Remove spring.

Thanks reddot. I got er all cleaned out. There must have been half a pound of grease in there. Gonna go try it out later.
