USGI Fiberglass M14 Stock...what clear coat?

Hey all i recently purchased a m14 and a usgi fiberglass stock to go with it.Ive stripped the stock down,done all the mods(filled selector etc etc)it turned out pretty good i think.Now here's my problem...i painted the stock ultra flat black(krylon) now im trying to figure out what clear coat to use to finish it.Im torn between matte(which cant be bought in this pos town i live in) or satin.If anyone has any pics or some kind of advice i would appreciate it greatly.

i sometimes use a satin clear on my m14 stocks.. but... it picks up dirt, and rubs off too.. im probably use a POS brand.. but still.. its put me off... go to your local car painter/panel beater .. get him to give it a blast over with a matte clear .. better than anything you'll buy in a can
 
I can definitely look into finding a shop around here that can do something like that,but in the meantime im limited to walmart/canadian tire/home hardware lol.Is the Krylon clear coat not good enough?(even after multiple coats) im sadly without a compressor or spray gun for that matter,so anything that comes in a can would be great.

Use outdoor wood furniture matte clearcoat from home depot or hardware store of any kind. Polyurethane. Hard as nails and stands up real well. And it won't pick up dirt like flat paints and flat spray clearcoats.
 
Ya was going to go with the matte clear from krylon but for some stupid reason all the stores where i live only sell the gloss and satin clear finishes.

Also ya please post some pics of your stock,very curious as to what it would look like.
 
ok here are some pics, just off the bench 2 days ago. Keep in mind, this is my first refinish job so any imperfection is acceptable:p (I should do more sanding and let the primer sit overnight)

I know from experience that if you use a Krylon clear coat and it goes for gloss, matte and satin, too many coats and it tends to go a tad cloudy. It could ruin the effect that you want to achieve. FWIW, I usually go with a satin finish with 3 light coats 15 minutes apart. Best thing to do is wait for a full cure of your primary colour, 3-5 days, before applying the clear.

This method works for me but I know some of the other guys also have different methods they swear by.
 
go to RONA
get thier brand of laquer clear matte. compatable with krylon that has cured for at least 24 hours. Krylon matte clear is hard to find at the best of times i have found...... Rona always has the matte clear. EASY to use, dries super fast, and recoatable at any time. 4 to 5 coats of this product and you will be smiling. JUST WATCH that you do not build up too much paint and clear coat layers on the top bedding surfaces of your stock.
 
We dont have a rona here,only a home depot/home hardware/walmart.So im guessing i would be ok to go with there brands of matte clear as well?
 
What type of paint store's are in your area? Cuz if you have a Sherman Willams store they stock krylon paint's. ICI & General Paint have there own budjet brand witch I don't recomend but if they have Varithane Dimond coat in a spray bottle get it. Also make sure it's for extior. It will leave a rock soild coat that won't flake of if you prep it properly.
 
Ok after much searching i managed to get my hands on some Rona laquer clear matte.I found it in a Rona that i never even knew existed, its about the size of a large mobile home lol.Ill give this a shot and post some pics when its finished.
