Wolverine had their standard barrel IDF kits on sale for $650.00 a while back so I picked one up on a whim. When the parts arrived I saw that they were in near new condition so I went to John (M14 Medic) to source a quality receiver. Got hooked up with a pre-2007 NOS heal stamped Norinco that was measured at NM spec.

Other work:

- TRW bolt was lapped into the receiver with a final headspace that is 1-2 thou over minimum.
- H&R trigger group got polished and tuned, pads were bedded in the stock.
- Handguard was relieved for stock clearance, neoprene pads stop it rattling and barrel staked to stop it from hitting the receiver.
- Op rod spring guide and gas piston ditched for a Sadlak replacements.
- Bushnell Tactical Elite scope mounted on M14.ca rail (the latter is gonna get swapped for a sadlak soon).
- Gas parts peaned and shimmed.
- Op rod guide peaned and aligned.

My spotter and I took it out to run some OCW load development today, he brought the “sniper security” SKS that built him a couple months back.

Frankly, I’m blown away by how tight this rifle shoots... using a variety of ammo:

149gr MILSURP = 1.3 - 1.6 MOA avg.
168gr FGGM = 1.0 - 1.5 MOA

OCW load development was done using Win brass, 210m primers, 168gr SMKs and H4895. Cases were trimmed to uniform length, primer pockets uniformed and flash holes debarred. Powder started at 41.0gr and went up to 42.8 in 0.2gr increments. RANGE WAS 50 yards.

42.0 - 42.2gr grains shows as a good node that also shoots ACCURATE. Obviously these are preliminary results but these all shot from 1.0 to 1.25 MOA!!! If that holds true I will be HAPPY... all in this rifle cost me just over a grand, can’t argue with that.

I'm curious how you stayed at $1000. Wolverine $650 pls tax = $734.50 assuming 13% hst. Then you had to ship it. Then you bought a hand select receiver that I am sure was well over $250. I typically have to scrap a rifle to get a decent receiver to build on, call it $600 or so. Then you bought sadlak parts, bedding materials, scope, mount rings... The sadlak mount will be $300+ for a steel one.

Sounds more like $2k to me???

What I said was “all in this rifle cost me just OVER a grand”. Fair point re: shipping, aside from that the only immediate costs were the kit and the receiver. Everything else I had available already + I’m buying the Sadlak mount in the future. Basically, you are right - total cost is higher but my statement only referenced what it cost for the build, it did not factor parts which were sat on my gunroom shelf.

This is another inspiring post and I just love it when people share these with us ! Thank you so much .

Well you also inspired me a bit. Looking at your pic i saw you started with an IDF stock and the following pics are showing regular butt plate. I had a closer look at mine and found that i could easily remove my rubber IDF butt pad and install my norinco butt plate. So at about 11pm last night i made the switch and I am so happy about it.

Mine isnt as nice as yours or what Claven2 did as described in his "save a ratty idf stock" thread, ( where he rebuilt it to look like a regular USGI stock) but I like it way better than that rubber pad!! I didnt know it was that easy of a swap until I saw yours and decided to peel back some of the silicone and found the half USGI buttplate i underneath. I hadent even thought about attempting to make it fit.

What a pleasant surprise!
