USGI Op Rod on Norinco Receiver - doesnt' fit

Hi,

I have got permission from the boss to attend the February M14 workshop.

A lot will depend on when I get my bare receiver from Marstar (i.e. in time for workshop.)

If i get it in time -- the plan is to switch over a prohibited receiver to a semi-auto one.

If not, then tuning up my new Norc.

Question: Last night I had a bit of time and tired to swap over the bolt and op-rod from the USGI to the Norc receiver.

When positioning the op rod into the receiver slot it appears to be hanging up (i.e. wont seat itself far enough in the recevier slot to be able to move fore/aft).

Is it normal to have to work to op rod to make it fit Norinco receiver?

The good news is the bolt appears to fit perfectly (head spacing and lug fitting aside).

Note - I was asked to not dissasemble the USGI M-14 prior to the workshop so a group photo could be taken with it prior to the swap. :cool:

usgi m14 .... if you were thinkin of bringing the complete rifle to the clinic..... it's a prohib and i can't allow it due to the legalities of the transportation of prohibs. If you have transport papers that will allow it than by all means. I hate to even have to say that.... but thems the laws we live under :rolleyes:
Bring the entire parts kit, less the completely stripped receiver.

If you need the barrel pulled so you can bring the enitire parts kit we may have to do that at yer place or find someone local to you with an appropriate barrel vice.

oprods and bolts..... generally the bolt will need to be lapped in. It may drop right in to the reciever but MUST be headspaced checked and lapped to suit desired chambering. Generally a usgi bolt is lapped in to achieve .308 1.630 headspace. Lapping beyond that , say to achieve 7.62 nato headspace of 1.635 with a uagi bolt/norc receiver combo is not a good idea as too much surface hardening is being removed in the lapping process. Occasionally a very worn but serviceable usgi bolt can be lapped in and come close to 7.62 nato headpsace.

Oprods..... yes, expect to have to do some minor fiting to mate the usgi oprod to the norc receiver. This a good thing as it will ensure that the oprod is tuned specifically to your reciver/barrel combination. If you are attending my clinic in february, I'll walk you through your complete build and by the days end.... you will have a complete rifle, tuned and ready to hit the range. ;) We'll take some photos as well for posterity hehehe

Sorry if this knocks the thread off-topic but how does one acquire a stripped 'rinco receiver?

Hungry here: Buy yerself the complete M14 boomstick and then pull all the parts off the receiver. Sell all the parts on the CGNutz EE Forum and you have a stripped receiver remaining. I did this for 2 NM style rifle builds (sold them 2 years ago) by screwing on Douglas NM Hvy and then installing USGI parts that I accumulated back in the 1990's. :D

Asked John at Marstar back in June what a stripped Norinco receiver would cost. Said they'd put one aside for me.

Still waiting - they were getting all the orders out before xmas and I said I could wait.

I've looked at the CFC web page and I can get a one time conveyance permit for transporting the prohib to the workshop and then back home.
Will call next week and confirm.

There is nothing magic about a converted full auto. Use the same conveyance permit one would use to transport it to you new house when you move.

Why would he need to pull the barrel prior to arriving? We have done this at previous clinics. What are we missing at your place. Or did you mean just if he couldn't get a transport permit?

From what I have read this is perfectly normal. It can be polished a little (at the clinic) or just worked until it drops in. It will loosen up with use.

Mine was the same, I used a small file to take a few thou off the hook at the back of the op rod, now it is perfect.

Be careful, when I was doing this I was able to get it to fit after a few strokes with a file, but it was a real 'bugger' to get back out. After a bit more filing it went in and out easily
 
we will use diamond paste lapping compound for this job.... and maybe an extra fine stone..... files and dremels should not be required ;)
