Using 454 casull brass for lite 410 shot shells.

They would be pretty short. I did try a piece of sized .454 brass in my Mossberg 510 and it locked up just fine. I will try some of my Speer shot capsule rounds through it tomorrow.

Ohhh, this could be fun. The .45 colt shot capsules I have almost feed from the tube. If one were to use a piece of .454 and load the capsule out a bit long you could nearly double capacity.

Its a old Mossberg bolt action. I got it to feed a single piece of virgin brass. I have my doubts on its reliability but late night thoughts.

Sorry mine is a 500, not sure where I got 510 from. If you plan to use just the cases I doubt you'll achieve the length needed to feed through anything. I don't have anymore capsules to try loading some .454 shotshells to the length I would need for feeding but I am confident I could get it working. Your bolt gun wouldn't be too bad to run as a single shot. I have no doubt you could fit enough small shot in to make an effective short range shell.

Alright, despite the wind I did some quick testing. My shells are .45 colt loaded with Speer shotshells. Each capsule has 35 #4 birdshot pellets inside. You don't need capsules I am just lazy and find them convenient. Shot from a 24" full choke Mossberg 500.

This is what I would call the effective range of the shell. You can see from the 20m target that it all turns to crap.

It's just some preliminary testing but I am pretty interested in this so far. A .454 could hold a fair bit of 7.5. No need to use the capsules you can make a gas seal out of whatever and cover the top with a cardboard disc.

Yes you can use .444 and .303, that has been common for decades. I haven't heard much about .454 tho, I enjoy things that haven't been beaten to death. I'm just trying to figure out how to make a bunch of cheap but durable gas seals right now and I will continue testing.

When you say gas seal what do you mean?

Honestly my plan was mystery powder with felt of mystery thickness with shot of mystery weight with a piece of cardboard and a heavy crimp on the 454 die.

I honestly was just fishing for reasons why this was a bad idea and I got a guy running tests.

What about 460 S+W brass? Probably too expensive initially, not sure.

I was just going with what I had on hand. Kind of surprised that the gun(guns as B's works as well) chambers as the rim thickness is about double that of a shot shells.

I would think 460 brass would work better just because of length.

For the same reason .454 is better than .45 C in this case the .460 would be better of course. It too chambers and extracts but I only have a half dozen cases so pursuing that is pointless for me.

What I mean by gas seal is just a durable disc capable of stopping the gases from flowing past the shot column when fired. I have fibre wads but I figure plastic will give a better strength to height ratio. Using very fast shotgun powder like Red Dot leaves me thinking I may need the strength due to the violent smack on the ass the shot column is going to be hit with.

The rim on the cartridges we have talked about seem thinner than .303 but thicker than .410. Sort of a goldilocks situation thankfully.

I have no doubt I can come up with a load that does much better than the #4 .45 colt shells I illustrated earlier. Those were made on a whim with pretty much no testing.

I am sort of working on making up loads for my Lee Enfield .410's, one chambered in 2 1/2" and one in 3". I made some out of plastic Imperial hulls, but they don't fit in the 2.5 one. I had two .395 balls in them. I fired them off in a CBC .410. I need to blow out some fresh .303 brass. Not sure if regular .410 ammo will fit in the 3" one. Been a while since I fiddled with them.

I carefully stored some nice .410 wads, so carefully, in fact, that I haven't found them yet! :p. In the Imperial hulls I used 8gr of Trail Boss, a card, two .395 balls (Lee), and a card. My notes say I used a deep socket to crimp! Notes say it worked good.

Deaner and I did load some a few years back, but we didn't keep notes. We managed to hit a pop can once. More fun than any real scientific effort. I also bought some 444 Marlin brass that I might experiment with. Winter's comin' on! :)

I use a cork over powder card that I punch out of a roll that’s sold for making cork boards, and I use an over shot card punched out of an ice cream pail lid and held in place with a dab of hot glue(but I’m going to try Elmer’s for the next loading). The ice cream pail lid might work for your application
