ok i need some advice from people in the know .. and thats you guys.

im picking up either a rem700 or a savage 200 in .308 .. some hunting, some recreational target shooting and a lil long range practise ..
i can get my hands on some SA milsurp 7.62x51 Ball R1M1 ammo at a great price ..

now i know there is a difference in the rounds between that and .308 ...
my question, is it going to be safe to use that in my, soon to be, new rig ?

mainly just going to use it for plinking while i collect my reloading gear and start developing proper loads..

I have a 700P and I have yet to shoot '308' winchester out of it, depite the nay sayers who advocate only 'chris angel' should attempt it, I use 762x51 portugese, south african and IVI all to good effect and the port is good for under an inch all day long........

For most purposes, 7.62 and 308 are the same thing. The 7.62 case is very slightly smaller and the 7.62 chamber is slightly bigger, so as to acomodate dented rounds and dirt.

I have had the occassion to measure the headspace of range pick up brass to get an idea of just how much variation there is in chambers. largets to smallest was 15 thou difference. That is about 5 times the difference you will find between that ammo and your chamber.

If you put 7.62x51 rounds into your 308. Win. chamber, your genitals will fall off, the economy will collapse and the universe will implode. Note that this apparently wasn't the case before the Internet came about.

In all seriousness (and for future reference), you can check any chamber/ammo combinations here.

Do let us know how it shoots; I was considering surplus at some point...

I reload Dominion Arsenal and IVI 7.62 brass for my R700P .308. Just slightly higher velocity and pressures out of the same powder charge, as compared to .308 commercial brass. Seems to me that the Military brass can be trimmed a few more times before it's a throw away. Just a matter of getting out that nasty primer crimp out in the beginning.

I noticed milsurp jammed up my bud's Browing BLR and caused very difficult case extraction. Bolt guns probably don't have this problem... or maybe it was just the chamber dimensions of the BLR?

I have a Krico Rifle West German manufacture it will not let me close the bolt on milsurp ammo,in some case the bolt will not even go all the way forward.
