Hi,
I need to buy some gaschecks. I'll buy 8mm (.325) gaschecks. I don't make a lot of other calibers but, if I need to, could I use these 8mm gas checks on .314 bullets? The gascheck will probably not hold well but, once sized, will it be fine?
Have you tried that?
Thanks
Mat

Now I'm curious, just hang on a minute and I'll try one to see. OK... Lee 312x185gr., hornady 8mm gas check ,Lee push through 314 sizing die,...went through alright ,sized good ,seems to be crimped tight, and square. Might be a problem keeping the larger gas check centered on the smaller bullet shank,I don't really know, but this one looks good....catnip

My suggestion, which I've used several times for oversize checks, is to heat them red hot and let air cool, ... softens them up for a smaller bullet and won't spring off. used on .375's for .366, .429 for .423.

you dont have to air cool them. quenching in water doesnt harden copper like it would harden steel

Good point, but why would anyone want to water quench them and then have to deal with wet gas checks? They'll air cool quite quickly as they're thin and have a large surface area.

I have used 0.338" gas checks on 0.330" bullets and the sizing operation seemed to crimp them in place. If you use alox as a lube, it additonally acts as a sort of glue.

Interesting. I had a dealer order me 4 boxes of Hornady 8mm gas checks. I still have a good supply of 30 cal as well. I even have a box of old Lyman 30 cal checks.
