Using chedite instead of win209. Are they hotter?

Ok so I haven't seen a shell data list yet that included chedite primers so I started searching the forums.

Some say that they are a touch bigger so once you use them you can't go back to another primer. Then later I'm reading that they measure the same size as win209's now.

Some say you can use the Win209 recipes and swap in chedites no problem yet others say they are hotter and you need to drop the powder measure by .5 grains when using chedites in a Winchester recipe.

So my question is, were they hotter when they were bigger and that's when you needed to reduce the measure or are they still hotter and you should keep doing this? Also, are the chedites now consistently the same size as the win209's and will I be able to switch back and forth? Ive read of primers falling out after switching from chedites.

I'm going to be reloading 410 and 28 for skeet and plan to buy components in the next few days so any input is appreciated.

Thanks. The place I was planning on buying from was trying to brush it off saying they may be hotter but it couldn't make that much of a difference but as a new reloader, everything I've read tells me that's a bad way of thinking.

Get data and stick to it!! Never substitute no matter what you hear!! I have seen a barrel blown up by a fellow swapping components and another muzzle bulged causing the screw choke to be wedged in permanently!!
The retailer you are buying from is more concerned about your money than your well being if that is his advice!!!

They are, in most cases Cheddite 209's a touch hotter than Winchester 209's, you should only stick adhered tested data without substitutes, primer strength works with the rest of your components and the variability is not a straight predictable line. In most cases, you can use them in place of Winchester 209s in mid-pressure(8000-9000PSI) 12ga light targets loads, beyond that particular area, you need cannot swap components with any degree of safety. Once you venture into the gauges smaller than 16ga, swapping anything from the published data is downright dangerous. Don't do it.

With the small bores, small changes can make huge pressure changes. What might effect the 12ga by 1000 psi, could mean exponentially more in the .410. I use the cheddites in 12ga 1oz loads and am quite happy with them. One of the few complaints you hear about is pierced primers is certain O/U's, however I haven't experienced that issue is any of my guns.

Cheddite 209 primers sold in N. America are standard diameter, but do have a different taper profile from Winchester.
There are Euro diameter primers but AFAIK the Cheddite Euro primers are not on the reloaders retail market on this side of the Atlantic..

For what it's worth I've shot probably 70,000 cheddite primers there abouts maybe more ? In 12-20-28-.410 ga and I don't change anything from the win 209 data. Most of them were shot in 28 & 410 & 20 ga. I rarely load 12 ga.
Most of my fellow shooters at the club do the same.
I'm not suggesting anyone follow my lead............
But I'm following the same course.

I had a bunch of Challenger Competition Trap & Skeet shot shells (the old red box) and they were headstamped "Cheddite". Win 209 primers would fall out of the pocket when I attempted to reload them.

I ordered 10K of Cheddite for half price of the same ammount of W209. There is reloading data for Cheddite on Hodgdon website so at least for me it was no question if I should buy or not. I will only use Cheddite for reloading hulls so I don't care if they're a bit larger or not.

Moose; Whereas I do use a pile of Cheddite 209 primers, their hulls generally aren't worth the effort to bend over pick them up, they are probably the worst hull I've ever loaded.

I only use 3 hulls, Remington STS/Nitro 27, Federal Paper & Winchester AA/HS. Used to load Federal Top Gun but in all fairness they use as much powder as the Gold Medal papers and I have an abundant supply of them. On rare instances, I will load Remington Gun Club hulls. Cheddites have more internal volume than Federal Gold Medal plastics, requiring a very fast burning low density powder to get a decent stack volume, the brass has a habit of going oval when you crimp them, gave up fighting with them in short order.

Well, I guess the price difference it has to reflect somewhere. AA are my favorites as I can't find STS or quality Federal anywhere. I bought around 10 000 AA for 0.01$ so I'm set for a while. I accumulated for free WAA wads in time as being part of various deals in huge quantities. Now buying W209 primers for 64$/1000 would be sacrilege.
For shooting trap with my family Cheddite will do just fine. And at half price of the W209.

No issue using Chedite 209s in 12ga target loads. My current target load is Winchester AA/HS hull, 17.0Gr of 700-X, Cheddite 209, WAA12SL under 1oz of #8 or 9, Pressure is 9300 PSI Velocity is 1220FPS. The recipe calls for Winchester 209. Locally, Cheddite 209s are $44.99/1000.
