Hi there, im looking for data for loading soft cast 425 gr lead bullets in my handi rifle, would like to use these 2 powders, as i have a bunch of it, currently shooting 350 grain hornady round nose at around the 1900fps mark, but would like to launch these 425 grainers at 13-1400fps, i have tried IMR3031 with a cornmeal filler, with good success, but would like to try these powders as well

the H4227 AND THE H322

any info would be great

42.0 grs of H322 will launch that 425 gr lead bullet at between 1300-1400 fps. No need for filler.

Not seeing any data for a 425, anywhere. No H4227 data either. Mind you, it's very close to IMR4227. Data's not interchangeable though.
Soft cast may not be a great idea. I'd be using 'TrapDoor' data too.

Your choice of powders are at the two extremes for the 45/70, 4227 is kinda fast burning and would build pressure fast if pushed hard. 30 grs. of 4227 pushes your bullet 1450fps and builds up 22,000 cup pressure. That is prolly all you want to do with that bullet and powder, is the cast bullet gas check? If it is, you can be more flexible with speed and pressure. H-322 is best used in fairly large amounts for heavier loads, although 43 grs. of it will give you same velocity but 17,000 cup pressure, and prolly unburnt powder. I prefer AA2015 and Rl-7 for the same uses and they are smack dab in the middle of your two powder's burning rates.

425 grain soft cast bullets, in 45 70

ok well i do appreciate the responces, these bullets are not gas checked, i was using 39 grains of IMR 3031 with a cornmeal filler, and seat bullet on that, gave me 2.5" groups at 100yrds, with 4 shots, i was given these 2 lbs of powder free today by a former reloader, i had found some data in my hodgdon load manual for H4227 but i think they were for jacketed bullets, bullet weights were specified 385-405 grain loads, start of 34 grains at 1595fps, and a max of 36g
at 1631 fps, loads are classed for "marlin 1895/ ruger"

any suggestions where to start with it for that lead bullet, im looking for old ballistics for the gun, 1300-1400 fps, maybe use it on deer, i tried a 30 grn charge and weighed it on digital scale and set it in case, "lots of room left"
i have some ox yoke wads made of felt made for 45 cal muzz loading guns
could i use those to take up gap in case?? or would this cause pressure differences
