Hi guys heres my stupid question of the day, im trying to learn how to range with my mark 4 leupold 3.5-10x. My question is when ranging with the mil dots do I want to be on a specific power setting? Ive never used them until the other day and of course when i was on 3.5 power I was getting a different mil reading than when I was on 10 power? I cant seem to find any reference as to where my scope should be set. Thanks guys.

Yes, you want to be on a specific power setting. Many manufacturors mark the magnification setting in some way to indicate the correct one to use. I'm not fortunate enough to own a Leupold Mark 4, so I can't tell you which setting, or how its marked. Perhaps a different color or a dot?

Worst case scenario, mark a 1 yard high object at 100 yards and see that it fills 10 mildots.

Edit: I'm thinking its the highest setting, if there is no obvious marking. See the manual from Leupold:

If it is front focal, it should work similarly at all power settings.

The problem maybe that, in order to produce the most accurate results, you have to be very accurate in your reading of the Mils. Down to the 1/10th of a Mil. Which can be more difficult at the lower powers as compared to the higher ones.
