Has anybody tried this? I was able to garner some data using Gordon's Reloading Tool (estimated starting at 57 grains for a 139 grain bullet) But I'm hoping for a sanity check, because that's only 75% case fill for a relatively slow burning powder. I want to do this because I have a lot of big game powder and figure I can make a ~.308 win approximating load to shoot out of my hunting rifle at the range. This is the only "hunting" gun I've got and I'd like to shoot it more often.

Big Game is a mid burn rate, similar to IMR 4064 or Varget. I would maybe look for some IMR 4064 or Varget data for 7mm Rem Mag to help guide load development

Hodgdon.com lists 130gr data for 4064 & Varget for 7mm Mag :

Varget 54.0grs max @ 2998 fps (51.0grs start load)
IMR 4064 55.4grs max @ 3048 fps (52.0grs start load)

Better suited to the 7mm Rem Mag would be Ramshot Hunter, which is 4831'ish or Ramshot Magnum (H1000/7828 ballpark), but I get what you're trying to do with the plinker load BigGame application

Thanks guys. I ended up using gordon's reloading tool to cook up some 139 grain hornady BTSP with 55-57 grains of big game. This level of case fill felt comfortable to me in avoiding Secondary Explosive Effect (guided by Lee's Modern Reloading 1 on avoiding this) and should give ~2800 FPS.

what your chronograph said to you with that load?

RBG is pretty close to Varget I think - check the burn rate chart to be sure. You might want a slower powder to get the most out of that less-efficient cartridge. Anything you'd use for 30-06 or 300wm should be fine for 7mag too. Ideally you'd want the case between 90 and 100 percent full.

WHY ? Too fast a burn rate - there are MUCH BETTER powders fir a 7 RMag . RJ
