i'm looking at the usp ct or the xd springfield (45 gap or auto). how do these two stack up against each other? is the usp worth the extra expense?

USP is a better built more accurate gun. Is it worth more money? Maybe on resale. Its your cash buy what you like the best and what shoots best for you.

I would take the USP over the XD as well. I had a USP in 40 S&W and it was an excellent shooting/working handgun. I just can't get used to the XD's....

I would buy an HK in a heartbeat if they'd go to an American-style button mag release.
I have the same problem with the HK lever release as I have when I try to ride a "modern" motorcycle with the shifter and rear brake on the "wrong" sides. Muscle memory is a very, very difficult thing to reprogram.
I love my XD. :D

 pure conjecture.

My advice, take both for a spin and see which you like best. If your wallet can handle the extra hit from the USP, go for it.

Dollar for dollar, I would (and have) take the XD.

A more expensive gun will not make you a better shooter any more than buying a Ferrari will make you a better driver. ;)
Whether or not an HK USP is a "better" pistol than an XD is not the point and a fatuous argument at best. Try them both, then buy the one that feels 'just right' for your hand, points well, and above all, shoots well for YOU. :)

isn't the mag release ambi on the XD as well?

I had a jam in my USP last weekend, first one in 8000rds!
I saw a person using an XD the same weekend on my squad, I lost count of his jams, he was hitting it off the ground to unjam it! In the guns defence, the shooter was using reloaded ammo, but then so was I.
A few months ago another shooter was using and XD and had a handfull of Jams. That being said I think they are decent guns for the price, and I would think of getting one because they appear to have decent ergonomics and are easy to use. BUT, I would only use ammo I was sure would work in it.
They are not in the same league as a USP. You pay more for a USP, but you are getting a more reliable pistol. If you are looking for a Pistol with an easy first shot (which is a good feature to the XD), than a USP with a 6 lb DAO LEM trigger would be the ticket.

You could also try the USP custom sport. After some dryfiring and use the trigger gets smoother in DA, and the SA is good from the start.

Handle (shoot if possible) both for sure…neither gun fits my hand well, (that’s why I own a Steyr M-A1 ;) ) If that wasn’t the case I’d probably go for HK.

Hate to say that, it is not fare to VS this and that at a almost double price range. If you like a 2x4 grip, a little better workmanship but at a double price range then go for it, as it is a very good gun. But a XD for me is better gun because of better feeling of the grip and the workmanship is very nice but not over priced. They are of the same famous in North America. Since XD came into market, Springfield took away tons of Glock and HK share and nobody seems to regret their purchase and you may think about why? Just my 2 cents

I've shot both and prefer the XD. That and I won't buy a hand gun from a company that refuses to sell long arms to civilians.
Where did you get the idea that HK refuses to sell long arms to civilians?

Correct me if im wrong here... but i do recall seeing a thread somewhere about the cheaper quality of blueing on the xd which wears off easier and causes rust to come sooner.

It all depends on how they fit in your hands i guess. I have shot a USP¨and loved it. I have handled a steyr and a glock also, and couldnt be bothered with either, even though they are most probably very good pistols.
