It really gets my goat.
A year ago Ed and I discussed building up a precision rig. A simple exercise for some, when dealing with Ed it goes a little further. Every time I specified a component I was asked why. Every time I asked his opinion he wouldn't give it.
This may seem strange to some but the point here was Ed doesn't need my business. He has a long line of people waiting to have him build a rig and if he is going to put in the effort then he expected me to practice 'due diligence' as well.
Fact of the matter was, although I could spec a long list pf top shelf components I was unable to justify my choices...in other words I didn't know sh*t and was being a poser.
With this realization I knuckled down and did some serious research. A month or so later I knew what I wanted my new rig to do and had the knowledge needed to discuss it with Ed. Once I had made this effort Ed was happy to discuss all manner of variables and to suggest directions I hadn't thought of but now knew enough to appreciate.
It took 7 1/2 months to build my rifle. As anyone who has done this knows, tying up thousands of dollars in something as ethereal as a rifle build is not easy but through yoga and tantric breathing exercises i was able to do it.
When I finally received my rifle I couldn't have been happier. Fit and finish where truly excellent and the lines just FLOOOOOOOOOWED. Everything seemed great.
I say seemed because now that I have shot it I have discovered a MAJOR inconsistency.
When I developed a criteria for this rifle, the #1 spec was that it be able to shoot 1/4 MOA with handloads. I'm not talking benched in a rest or sandbagged to the gills, I'm talking off the bipod with a small sandsock under the butt.
This is a 5 rd. group shot at 100m. These are rounds number 111 - 115. The group is 9/16 outside so .19875" center to center.
The problem is that I was using FACTORY ammo. I specified this sort of performance from handloads. I mean really, how hard is it to get it right?
The rifle in question
Now I'm not saying that Ed's not a stand up guy....he has offered to refund my money and keep the gun but really, that's not the point.
I'm thinking of suing him in court for damages.....what would you guys do?
