Hey all,

Im wondering what your experiences are with vac sealing ammunition for long term storage? Desiccant packs in the bag or not? Double bagged? I bagged and sealed the "cleanest" looking stuff I could find in my safe this morning. Curious what it will look like a year from now. 2. 5. 10? It will sit alongside the rest of my ammo supply in my safe.

Eventually I think I'd like to seal a bunch of ammunition that I really dont foresee me using in the near future. It cant hurt it, can it?

Get a surplus 50 cal, 30 cal cans, dump ammo in, put moisture packet on top. Seal. Forget! No need to vaccum seal.i have ammo that's 5 years old in an ammo can and works fine. I usually put a card in as well that says what kind of ammo and round count.

why vac seal ammo? I have hunting ammo that is 30 years old and fires perfectly. How long are you planning to store it? Are you planning to store it outside in the elements?

Real ammo cans just as AMET said. They were designed for long term storage, I have seen ammo come out an ammo can that was under water for 10 years that was just like from the factory

Because I have a vac sealer and lots of bags. I dont have ammo cans. For context, I have some thats 30 years old and its still fine. Im also looking for things to do and this could keep my busy for a while

Not really a specific reason. I find that I have a lot of boxes of hunting ammunition which I really have no intention of using in the near future. If I can seal them now and have them in as good condition in another 30 years then I'll be happy.

The humidity swings here are quite bad though, and although Ive kept it managed for the 10 years Ive lived in my house maybe that wont always be so? I dont know. Just wondering.

Get Silca desiccant packs and give a a go let us know how it works out. Not a terrible idea to make little battle packs you can grab and go with

I have vacuum seal some of my good non-corrosive ammo in their paper boxes. Why? because I can, doesn't hurt...future barter and I am anal.

I always carry a box of ammo, sealed in foodsaver vacuum bag in my hunting pack, on top of my normal ammo load out.
In a survival situation, ya never know right?
But for storage at home I also use surplus ammo cans and dessicant.

just for poops and giggles, and because I was bored, I vacuum sealed some 9mm ammo with my FoodSaver a few years back. The bags that had loose rounds in them held their seals just fine and it was probably a year and a half later when I opened the last one. It was still fine. I had less success with boxes of ammo, however. the corners of the boxes seemed to make tiny hols in the foodsaver bags and most of those bags showed signs of air getting (they had lost their tight vacuum sealed look) in 1 or 2 days later. if I remember correctly, I did have one bag with a box of ammo in it that was perfectly fine and had no air leaks.

Thankyou for your reaponse

It can't hurt. Considering there is surplus around that's 40 to 50 years old that was stored in sealed cans, a Ziploc freezer bag with a desiccant should work just as well.

Vacum sealing if properly done should last a lifetime. Dessicants have to be replaced once they have absorbed their max capacity of moisture. Either way, ammo is not a perishable commodity.

I was thinking of the same thing !

thanks krausb for the tip

on a totally unrelated note, any one see where i can get 5 inch PVC?
Home depot by me seems to only carry smaller stuff, but they do have nice shovels.
